My friends and I have that now in high school indicating that we absolutely can't get into MIT if a student did last year. Is it just a rumor? If not, how does this thing actually work?

That is definitely not true from my school around 8-10 people get into MIT each year. We are just a really competitive public school.

Oh, forget to mention, I’m an international student. :D

Still not true.

Yes, as an international EC, I often see schools who might go several years between admits, and then get several in one year. There is no quota here per school. It is entirely based on the individual students. I should of course add, that as an international EC, I regularly meet brilliant, talented, wonderful applicants who do not get in.
