Oh really, well that’s a dilemma. I want to apply early EA at Gtown, and I’d have better chances at Gtown than at Yale, even if I apply ED at Yale ot Princeton, right @MYOS1634?
Run the NPC at both.
But you could risk Georgetown and if you don’t get in apply RD to wherever your brothers got in together that meets full need.
(for merit you’ll need to get that 32).
Don’t your parents refuse to pay tuition though? And even if you’re admitted to G’town, it won’t care that your parents disagree with the NPC results and you may well be unable to attend due to costs. What’s the situation there - have they said they’d pay for G’town?
They’ll pay for some of it. They talk like they won’t now, but I’m pretty sure if they would if I got in to a school like Georgetown or similar. They’d help at least a little bit. I ran the numbers and after aid, Gtown would cost around $25,000 a year. My parents would probably pay up to half of that. The rest I would pay off as loans and with an on campus job. @MYOS1634
You can only take $5,500 as loans. You’d need to earn money right this summer and throughout next year (not to exceed 6,000), then again over the next summer, to come close to that - and it’d still not be enough although it’d be close. Do you have a summer job right now? How much do you have, saved from that job/in savings?
In our collective experience from this website, adults will tell you that many kids think their parents will relent if they get into x school. I saw it happen ONCE - in all other cases, including a kid who’d gotten into cmu for CS ( 5% acceptance rate), the parents didn’t budge and the kid had to attend the safety that provided a full ride/was within budget.
I have money saved up, and I do have a job, but I’m not working (I’m in Morocco). But it’s NSLIY gave us a fairly large stipend, so and I won’t spend very much of it in Morocco. I’ll have a lot left over @MYOS1634
Yes, I forgot that… thought you were up late
G’Town will lik your profile - not a guarantee of admission of course. But the big issue will be costs.
How’s Morocco going? Do you get to practice your Arabic and your French? See any film that you managed to understand yet?
Don’t use up your EA on Georgetown if it stops you from SCEA at another school- esp if there are affordability issues!! Georgetown is very clear that you don’t get an admissions boost from EA. You are very likely to get rolled over into the RD pile, with no negative but no ‘extra’ from having applied early.
Also, for anybody ‘chancing’ on Georgetown, SFS is a completely different beast than ‘regular’ Georgetown- I know current students at tippy top schools - with lots of international / 2nd language cred- who did not get into SFS…
Morocco is going great! @MYOS1634, it’s only the third day of class, but I tested into the novice mid class to start, so I’m the only NSLIY kid who tested higher, so I’m the only one in my class. I’m picking up some Darija and French, and my Arabic is improved so much in only three days. I can communicate effectively with locals (kinda), and they love the fact that an American tries to speak their language. I love bargaining, it’s like a little game. I often get discounts just for speaking Arabic. The racism is kinda bad, but it all goes away when people find out I’m American and not a Senegalese migrant. I love it. @collegemom3717
“It” being Morocco, not the racism. I’m actually writing my SFS essay on the bad treatment of Afro Arabs in the Middle East, especially Morocco, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
^excellent. Ties into your field of interest and your experience in Morocco, is a topic of current scholarly interest, and is unique.
Thanks @MYOS1634. I’m pretty sure my essays are what’s gonna make or break me.
You are not doomed that you got a 31. If you are seriously considering another try at it, there is one in Sept and another in Oct. That means you could maybe get 2 in before the early action deadline. And if you do choose to try the SAT, then the first one is on Oct 1 and you will get the scores back before Nov 1 (the date of many early action deadlines). I’m telling the dates since your test scores are the only weak points. If you do decide to do regular decision applications, then there are a ton of test dates for you. If you get them up and write the essay like you plan on, you will be a much, much stronger applicant. Also, there is a lot of other really, really good advice here. Make sure to use it to your advantage!
I definitely will. Thanks @"Dhaval G. I’ll probably end up taking the SAT.
@NikkuWadde Good luck with that!
Bump. I’d appreciate any other thoughts/advice.
Bumpppp
Bump. Any other thoughts?
Are pursuing going to retake?
@MYOS1634 Am I going to retake? Maybe the SAT. I’ve already taken the ACT twice
Yes, I don’t know why “you” got corrected into “pursuing”!!! Are you going to retake the ACT = you can take it three times and won’t be dinged for it.
Retaking the ACT means you can retake the Subject tests too, since the dates are different, whereas the SAT takes place on the same dates as the Subject tests and you can only take one OR the other.
For the record, I think it’s astounding the SAT Subjects don’t include Arabic, since it’s a critical language for the US.
But at least you can take French (the November test will include about 20-25% on listening, while the October and December tests will be strictly grammar/reading/vocab).
