THE SHORT:
If I don't tell my counselor, will she be able to know which colleges I applied to?

THE LONG:
My counselor is a very vocal discourager of applying to multiple reach schools. She has told me to aim for less selective schools, although I do have a thorough list of safeties that I love.

In part, this has to do with the fact that our school calculates an annual college "success" percentage based on the number of students who are accepted to their first-choice school.

As such, I understand why my counselor would encourage us to apply to schools that we're practically guaranteed admission to. However, I still want to apply to my reaches (Dartmouth and Williams). Would my counselor know that I'm applying to those schools when she's uploading my recommendation?

If your school uses a central system for submitting your transcripts, recommendations, and other documents, then yes, your counselor will most definitely find out. Chances are, you won’t be able to hide which schools you’re applying to. However, you should not have to. I believe that your counselor is obligated to send your materials to whichever schools you wish, and you should definitely apply to all the schools you want to!!! Don’t ever let her discourage you. If your counselor is giving you trouble, talk to other counselors or the administration. Have you switched to another one, if possible.

If what you say is true, then not only your counselor but also the entire administration ought to be replaced. The goal of the school should be the welfare of the student, not how good the school looks.

It reminds me of some of the schools in our state who discourage high-stats kids from applying to our state math & science academy because they don’t want to lose the high-performers on the state tests - even though the kids have already exhausted all the math & science their home schools have to offer.

Yeah she will most likely found out.

I had a meeting with one of my school’s counselors to answer some questions I had about the college admissions process. She told me quite frankly that she doesn’t know where our students go to college. I came out of that meeting with no help whatsoever.

It is one thing to know where students are applying, but it is another thing to know where they actually attend. Even if a counselor knows where the student has been accepted, unless the student tells the counselor about their enrollment plans, the counselor won’t know. Chances are that it is the school secretary’s job to mail out the final transcripts.

New poster?
How would your GC fill out her section of the application, send those forms, a copy of her rec and the school profile, if she did not have your list? If you want to aim for reach schools…you should know what’s required on the CA and in the app process in general. It’s all online.

If the goal is to get into the first choice school, just don’t say that Dartmouth/Williams are your first choice and it won’t be a problem. In any case, a counselor that incompetent is unlikely to think that they are particularly selective institutions.

Thank you for all the responses. I’m actually a rising junior, so I’m very unfamiliar with the admissions/application process. However, I went with my sister on an East Coast college tour, which ignited my curiosity for this question.
