Does my friend have a chance?

Do you think my friend has a shot at USC with:

SAT composite score: 2020
SAT II (will take in JAN)

weighted GPA: 4.675
Unweighted GPA: 4.0

senior courseload:
Advanced Rhetoric/ poetry analysis
Intro to Analysis
Multivariable calculus
AP classes: Chinese, Chem, Euro History, Studio Arts, Computer Science

She took AP Calc, AP phys, and AP bio in 10th grade and here are some AP scores:

Psychology-5
USH-5
Stats-4
Calculus-3, sub 4
Phys-3

Stats:
*President of NHS, Student council, and graduating class
*Taught a young boy how to read
*A lot of volunteer hours and work with children

Background:

She was adopted from vietnam and her essay on the experience is powerful ( i think)
and has lived with her new family for ten years. She's been to over 100 national parks to explore and study the earth, geology, and biology with scientists...so she picked earth science as one of her majors.

Hobbies:
She's refurbished a 34 ft. sailboat with her dad's help and is currently building an experimental airplane in her dad's shop. experimental airplane= kinda like the bush planes
There's a bit more...but what do you guys think?

yes !

…and she just finished her application, so will applying this late hurt her??

the deadline is 11th! so no!

I think she has a quite good chance. Sounds like a very interesting person too! :)

That’s what I’m trying to tell her, but she’s worried that her SAT score is too low!

It’s not too low.

USC’s 25th and 75th percentiles:

SAT Critical Reading: 620 / 720
SAT Math: 650 / 740
SAT Writing: 640 / 720

Where does she fall within all of these?

CR: 700
Math: 650
Writing: 690

so I guess she falls in the upper middle…?

I think she has a good shot of getting in, with above average GPA, and average-ish SAT, and with her stories (granted I don’t think she has URM status as an east-asian) and background, I think she’ll bring a lot more to the school than most average students that they admit, so I’d say she has about a 60-80% chance, give or take a few %.

hmmm i don’t think she’s URM because I’m sure there are a lot of Vietnamese
at USC…however, she was adopted from a farming village so perhaps the adcoms
will consider her background? The only thing is, she came to America when she was six,
which means that she’s been living in the states (as a citizen) for most of her life…so will the school view her story as “not so interesting?”

^Depends on how she writes about it. You said her main essay was about it, right? If she writes about it in an interesting way, it’ll be interesting! I don’t really think she has a lot to worry about right now. Yes, admissions at really selective schools like USC can be a crapshoot, but her chances are more than fine and she should definitely apply.

^ oh and her graduating class has three people…

=/

:| Three people? Why?

she goes to a small charter school, but the classes are definitely more rigourous than the ones at my school…

How much will this affect her chances?

I don’t think it would affect her chances at all. Colleges look at each applicant in the context of his or her school. Having a counselor fill out the counselor report and detail what makes the school different/how the school functions and how your friend performed in comparison to other students would probably help, though.

I would say that she has a very good chance at getting in, and that she should definitely apply.

She said her counselor doesn’t mention her class, so should she leave that part out anyway? Unless of course, the forms asks for it…

Well, there’s a place on the application where you have to list your class rank, if you have one, and you’d put the number of people in the class there.

nice i guess she won’t need to put anything ( no rank)

thanks for your help!

No problem! :)
