Does my grad school subject have to be the same as my undegrad major?

I have an interesting problem.

I love music and literature, but music especially. Because I realized I would probably have to take a lot of theory classes that I couldn't care less about, I decided to major in English.

However, I've realized that for graduate school, I really, really want to get a PhD in Musicology, focusing on the philosophy of music, especially jazz. Columbia University offers exactly the program I'm looking for, an even has a Center for Jazz Studies.

Will my not majoring in Music as an undergrad prevent me from being accepted? At this point the least I can do is take some music and art history related electives.

no
Lots of people do mechanical engineering for their undergrad major, because not many undergrad schools offer aero engineering. When they go to grad school, they specialize in aero engineering. Just make sure it’s related and not off topic

@ kindofblue

Do you have any musical background? At these programs, you may have to audition and show you have talent before you can pursue a PhD in music studies. You can focus on the philosophy and history of music without a PhD in Musiciology. Have you tried History PhD programs?

That was my opinion exactly.

I would look into a History Phd with a focus in Music.
