Does my HS GPA make a big difference?

I'm currently going to Hudson Community College in New Jersey. It's been my 'dream' (aiming low, I've been told, but whatever) since I was in the 8th grade to attend and graduate from Rutgers University. I didn't apply for Rutgers in High School because I was embarrassed and knew I wasn't going to get in with a 1.80GPA.

So I went to community college instead and I'm about to start my 2nd year in the fall. My GPA is currently a 3.15 from a 1.80, so I was just wondering -- will that look GOOD or BAD in the eyes of the acceptance officers? I mean, yes it was really really bad, but will they take into consideration that I've brought it up dramatically, or will they just dismiss me?

My SAT score (if it makes a difference) was 1550.

If your applying to transfer now, colleges will look at your high school transcript especially your junior and senior year. I would recommend that you finish another year at your CC with a 3.3+ GPA and you should be able to transfer to Rutgers

You are at community college. Why is your GPA so low? You need a 3.5 to be competitive, especially with your low SAT score of 1550. I suggest retaking it. Aim for a 1900+, or a 28+ on the ACT’s. That way, you at least have relatively decent scores to contrast with your high school GPA.

It sounds to me like the OP will be doing their soph year this fall at CC and then will apply to Rutgers for for fall 2013, which would mean HS gpa would count much less.

Talk to your CC advisor, they have the most experience and should be able to tell you what you need to transfer to Rutgers.
