i earned just a bit under 3k this summer, do i have to file for taxes and tell css? im under 18

If this is your ONLY income…you not have to file taxes. You DO have to list this income on your financial aid applications even if you don’t file taxes.

However, if you had any withholding taken out of your income…you would want to file to get it back.

well my parents earn income…but if you’re asking about me, yes that is my only income. On css, they ask me if i plan on filing tax income, my answer should be no?
Also, the govt took out $800 in taxes

That’s an awful lot of withholding for just under $3000 in income. Anyway, you will have to file get that $800 back.

Edited to add: maybe some of that $800 is FICA… if so, you won’t get that back.

Dibby…it’s really not very hard to file a 1040ez tax return. You will be able to free file this…by going to the IRS website when the time comes, and you have your w2 form from your job for 2014.

Just do it. Really…it’s easy…one page, not very many questions. You will get any federal taxes withheld back…but not FICA. It’s worth doing.

And your income MUST be reported on the Profile and FAFSA even IF you do not file taxes.

For $800 back? File.

for income, do i put the income with or without the tax?

Some of that could have been state income tax too and if so you would want to file a state return to get that back. Look at your last paystub and see exactly what was taken out for what. Next time you fill out a W-4 form pay close attention to how you are filling it out. That is a lot of withholding for that income. SS and medicare on $3k would be about $230.

And to continue the affirmation, you do have to report that on fafsa and profile.

i never filled out a W-4 lol…?
also, does it matter whether or not i tell css that i am filing a tax return, as long as i report how much i earn?

In Jnauary sometime, you will get a W2 form. On that form, will be all the info you need. Each box is numbered.

I’m assuming you are filling out a Profile now to meet an early deadline. If so, get out your latest pay stub and see what it says for your wages.

i worked only in the summer. Should i report income with or without tax?

what are you doing for,the parent portion? Do the same thing!

i literally have no idea what im doing, im just copying numbers from the tax returns.

Are you able to sit down with your parents and complete the form together? They will have a good understanding of the tax information the profile is asking for.

^You should report your work income before any taxes withheld as your earned income

@4kidsdad thank you!
and my parents dont speak english, so they are no help
