i am going to be a history major. i got a 800 on the world history sat II, two 5s on AP world history and us, and have gotten As in all my ap history classes. also, i am mexican american. i got a 1930 on the sat and have decent extracurriculars. does it help at all?

not really. first UCs don’t practice AA, second doing a history major is very common when people don’t know what they want to do yet.

no, it won’t help at all b/c history is in the college of letters and science. if you apply to L&S, berkeley pretty much disregards your intended major b/c L&S is so broad and they expect you to change majors anyhow. the only time your intended major will matter at UC berk is if you apply to the college of chem or engineering. those are the major-specific colleges, so they’ll include an evaluation of your chem/engineering interest and aptitude.

thank you for the input

Well I mean, it technically helps that your major does not fall in, for instance, the COE. The fact that it is history as opposed to something else is probably less important.

Uhm, but I think if you demonstrate interest in history and have good results for history, that can give you a slight little push. Mostly, though, your admission will be done based on numerical stats [general ones].

Intended major is not even an admissions factor for College of Letters & Science (where History is located). But, intended major is critical for College of Engineering.

This is likely true, and likely mainly admissions are done based on raw scores. Doesn’t mean, though, that significant achievement in some subject isn’t going to light up some eyes. I’ll admit that Berkeley doesn’t do very much of the “personal touch” to admissions. But all the same! They do require a little essay about your academic interests usually, and saying you want to study history + having great records should count for something. It could be just what’s necessary to push someone over with a lower SAT score…though I think such students are prob. better off trying their luck at private schools
[where raw SAT’s and GPA are less major determining factors].

G’luck to the OP.

It’s beyond “likely”. If you check Cal L&S Admissions, it states right on the website that intended major is NOT any factor. The reason for this is that the vast majority of kids change their intended major 2-3 times!

yeah intended majors don’t really count as much, unless you’re applying to berkeley’s college of chemistry, or college of engineering and etc, then you have to have great SAT II Math scores and specific stuff like that.

how screwed am i if I put mechanical engineering as my intended major?

im a girl, if they care about that it may possibly help a little tiny bit…maybe…? lol i don’t know why I did that. I’m not even 100% sure thats what I want .

post application regret

hey shalala I think you’ll be fine as long as you did well on your Sats, essays, and gpa-wise. Being a girl doesn’t really help, not as far as I;d know

Honestly, you made the right move in most ways…unless you really just put mechanical engineering down randomly, and not out of some inclination to study it. Because if you DO want to major in engineering, chances are you’d better get accepted on your way in. It would suck to go to a school and not be able to major in what you want to. That way, if you change your mind, you can do something else, as long as you maintain decent grades.

Also, it is true that if you had pretty good [doesn’t have to be 2300+ or anything] SAT’s, and quite good GPA [I think this matters more], you’ll have a great shot at acceptance. G’luck!

And well, by the number of girls in engineering classes I’ve seen…it won’t really help you likely =] don’t think they’re partial. That doesn’t mean you can’t get in out of merit though, I’d just take an objective look at my scores, and it should really give a decent idea. That way you’ll be less on tenterhooks.

2210 in a single sitting (760CR 790M 660W)
went up 110 pts in writing on try#2- unfortunately Berkeley doesnt care about that

gpa unweighted is 3.88, 4.65 weighted im not sure what it is according to the UC system. I’m in a competitive IB program, so hopefully that will account for lack of 4.0

i took bc calc last year, got a 5 on ap, now I take Multivariable calculus which is really hard, lol, but i managed not to get a C first semester thank goodness, and IB physics (which spans 2 yrs)

satII mathII-770
satII physics-650 (because i took in the middle of the material, i hope they understand this)

im feeling worse and worse about this, if you have any thoughts please share!

are you in state? and really it depends on your essays too, so if you did fine on those then I’m sure you’ll be okay, with grades and scores like that =D

nope not in state.
the essays were pretty good, I think, one demonstrated interest in engineering from young age, though rather general, and the other was about how i deal with competition in crosscountry (running).

thanks for listening!

you bros are harshing my buzz

i think you have a decent chance, but being instate would make a difference, at least thats how i feel.

as far as that 800 helping, it probably won’t make a huge difference since in l&s they don’t accept by major but any 800 is a definite plus
