I am a Michigan resident, junior, and go to a private catholic preparatory school.
31 Composite ACT
3.8 Weighted GPA

I want to major in a branch of engineering. Does my list make sense? Money could be a problem so I am trying to fid places that offer generous scholarships.

Safeties (in state)
Grand Valley
Michigan State

Matches (oos)
University of Dayton
Purdue

Reaches: (in state)
University of Michigan

So basically, my plan is that if I get into Michigan, I am going because for my interested areas it is a fantastic school with in state tuition. If I don't get into Michigan, I would probably look to Purdue and Dayton, and if money is a problem, an in state safety.

I think a lot of people are going to respond to this post bamboozled by why you're applying to only 5 schools, but I think they're all wrong. It seems like you know where you want to go and what you want to do, and your list reflects that. People always complain about college admissions being so competitive, and the only reason for that is because so many people apply to 15+ schools (about 12 of which they don't seriously consider attending). I think you have a solid list and I think you've done your homework on the schools. I think you'll be able to get into all of those universities.

A lot of ppl that dont get into UMich go to MSU. its truly a great school. U might wanna consider it over Purdue and definately Dayton cause Dayton aint that good.

yeah, obviously I don't know exactly what I'm doing yet. MSU I am currently putting in the "I know I can go here" category. I guess since I live in Michigan, It doesn't seem as great.

Apply to Michigan really early. The acceptance rate is much higher in before November. Plus if you get in you won't have to apply anywhere else.

Looks to me like you have planned out your colleges very well. I think that you should take the SATs for one, and then try to take Subject tests. Although they aren't necessary, they can look very apealing on a resume.

With a 31 and a 3.8, just write a good essay and get your forms in early - you have a good chance at Michigan. In state admissions isn't that hard if you have good numbers and go to a solid high school.

Dayton is definitely a safety, not a match.

I'd get rid of Grand Valley unless you really like it, because it's nowhere near as reputable as the rest of them (especially in engineering). Some people apply because they say it's smaller, but I never understand this - they have 20,000 kids?!

so would it be hard to get into UM with a WGPA 4.1 (oos-i live in so cal) and a 2090 on the SAT? i'll be applying there and im kinda scared. Im gonna retake the SAT...

What do you think about adding Indiana Bloomington to my list of schools to check out? I want to major in engineering. Do you think I could get a scholarship with my stats?
