Does my race/ethnicity status give me any boost?

My mother is Hispanic (Mexican) and my father is Indian (India). Does this give me an advantage? Would being Mexican have a greater advantage than being Indian? Does the Indian thing bring it down?

You can choose how to report you race. For example, my dad is black and my mom is white. On college apps, I will put black. I would recommend reporting yourself as latino, because that is an under-represented minority while asians are very well represented.

Both of them are important to liberal arts colleges who constantly seek for diversity (and struggle with it a bit more than normal universities). Hispanic is probably more a help towards your admission efforts, as they are a URM, whereas colleges have recently received a flood of Indian (or american born Indian) applicants.

That’s my thoughts on it anyways; being a mix, I’m from two countries that aren’t seen as URM material (Japan and Bangladesh). Ah hell, even then, emphasize how your diversity/ethnicity has made you special, and it’ll still be of help in your app, especially if you speak said languages…

Thanks for the advice! Is there a problem with only stating one race? Like is it illegal?

nope not at all! It’s perfectly legal to pick one.

Go to the Hispanic Students forum (under College Admissions; Specialty Topics); please start with the Definition and Resource sticky threads before posting a FAQ.

cool thanks guys

You can be Indian (well, I guess you would put Asian) and Hispanic. Someone who is Hispanic can be of any race because being Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. As long as you identify with the Hispanic culture, you are in fact Hispanic, no matter what your race is.
