Does my son have a shot a umass-Amherst?

Average 3.3. Sat's R=630 M=660 W=660 Superscore 1950
Captain of golf team. Co-captain of model UN (won prize at general convention). 1st chair at mock trial (2nd place all of queens county-nyc). BBYO-member to president of chapter to regional board member. Various service and community volunteer. In Davinci program which is an honors science/math program. Honors also in English and Social Studies. 2 college now courses. Worked since 14 years old. Obviously from out of state (NY). School does rank and although not given out yet I am guessing top 50%.

He really wants the sports management program but willing to go in as an undecided major and then apply after 1st year. Also if anyone knows how hard it might be to transfer into the program. Don't want to spend the out of state money if he really has no shot. Thanks

He has a very decent shot at getting in. I would apply for him.

Yeah. Unless there’s something unexpected like a teacher writes him a horrible recommendation, he’ll get it, I can practically guarantee it. UMass has been getting more selective recently, but it is still really easy to get in for most people.

Lots of students don’t get into the business school as first years. Your applicant can get in as long as he contacts sport management advisers even before arrival. They will be able to provide him with the most competitive first and second semester schedules. Your son looks like a fit for at least regular acceptance.

Nice SATs will likely compensate for the low GPA, but I would highly suggest getting the GPA up and sending in a mid-year update.

My younger brother was waitlisted last year and was eventually not admitted into UMass even with an undeclared major and instate and he had a 3.4 GPA (unweighted) and a 25 on the ACT.

My son got in undeclared last year. He was applying for engineering but didn’t get in.(instate, 3.3 UW GPA, 1980 SAT (720M, 660 CR, 600W), Eagle scout, part time job, good LOR. He decided not to go. Didn’t want to risk not being able to transfer into the program. UMass was his 2nd choice but obviously would’ve been cheaper. He got into UCONN for Mechanical engineering and that’s where he is UCONN was always his top choice.

Good luck! Hope he makes it!

If you are waitlisted for UMASS, when do you find out if you are accepted or rejected?

After applying early he was deferred on 1/15/14. The only thing they really want from him is his mid year grades which won’t be out until 1/31/14. He average this marking period should be about a 88 (unweighted) and he does have some honors and ap classes which will add to it. So it has gone up. We kinda knew he wouldn’t get into the sports management program first year and I told him I wouldn’t continue to pay the out of state rates if he didn’t kill it his freshman year and make it into the program. He is very disappointed but I told him it all depends on who is applying regular decision. To further update this is the way I see it: Grades on the low side, SAT on the high side. Recommendations all good to great and even one from the principal who writes about 5 a year (for a class of over 1000), essay was terrible in my opinion (he wouldn’t show it to me until it was due and by then it was too late for an edit). So it will continue to be a waiting game. This is his number 1 choice. He already got into Bowling Green and Ohio University. Waiting on UMass, U or Oregon, SUNY Cortland and Suny Brockport.

was he deferred from Umass or just from sports management? Did he apply with a second choice?

He applied to sports management as 1st choice and undecided second choice. Letter that came just said deferred, so not really sure.

Still waiting. Spire account went from deferred to under review last Friday the 22nd. Still haven’t heard. This poor kid has been waiting since Oct and its almost April. Really over 6 months already. Make a decision.

Found out yesterday. Admitted as undecleared (not sports management). OOS $6000 merit. Sending in deposit tomorrow.

Just as a conclusion of this thread. My son did get accepted in June to the Sports Management program. First semester 3.65 second semester 3.20. Joined both sports management clubs and let the professors know that he was very interested in the program. Said he wrote a killer essay on the admissions paperwork they ask you to submit. Happy that he got in and now the rest is up to him.

you had a very practical approach…and you area so right, the rest is up to him…best of luck.
