Does National Merit Really Help???

hey i was wondering, if you were a national merit semifinalist while applying to colleges, does that boost ur chances of gettin in, or is it jus padding on the cake?

thanks

At HYPSM? No. 1/6 of the Harvard class got national merit. At lower ranked schools, even really good ones like Vanderbilt, UNC, etc.? Definitely. They are more likely to accept you and more likely to give merit aid.

I'm a national merit finalist as well and I was wondering the same thing. Which schools would it help me get into being a national merit finalist? I applied to harvard, yale, brown, u penn, wesleyan, swarthmore, tufts, BC, BU, CC, and F&M.....

I think that National Merit would help with Wesleyan, BC, BU, CC and F&M. I doubt if it would count that much with the others because they get so many NM finalists applicants.
