Does national science honor society look good to colleges?

Above question ^

As in students who are in it, does it look good to be in it, especially for top r second tier colleges?

I’m not really sure, but what I’ve read on other threads and other people have commented saying it isn’t really that great, unless you’re able to become the president.

It’s not great, but like any other activities (and like the above poster said), getting a leadership position will look good.

i never joined it, waste of time imo. go after other clubs instead

No, it looks terrible. I heard that if you put it on your application then Ivys automatically reject you.

what if I start it and become president of my school’s chapter?
and dfree- why does it mean rejection?

oh elnamo, sweetie…

Haha I mean it’s a nice EC to have I guess, but it’s not a big deal as it’s not that hard to get in to; most colleges don’t think much of it.

But if I start a chapter and maintain an active chapter, will that help?

Absolutely not.

Honor societies are BS.

Disclaimer: I’m not in any honor society.

To be frank, the worst case scenario is that an adcom is going to wonder why you’re not in the society, especially if you are a top-tier student. For a top-tier student, it’ll look like a surprising omission - if they even think of Nat’l Sci. Honor Society when reading your app. Maybe he forgot to turn in the forms? Maybe he wasn’t qualified for the society?

Not being in Nat’l Sci. Honor Society isn’t a make or break deal. Adcoms pretty much know that it is BS anyway, unless you somehow get a leadership position in it.

No, it looks terrible.

Any opinions on Spanish Nat’l Honor Society, NHS, and the like?

Knowing that students only join because they think it will look good on an application, no, it’s not that great. I wouldn’t even say a leadership position looks that great. It’s equal to any other club.

so then what are some other similar science societies I can bring into my school? (new commenters can comment about national science honor society if u want)

bummpppppp

bump again…

I have the same question. when you guys are saying it’s not that great, do you mean it is equal to other clubs or doesn’t mean anything at all. because judging from what everyone’s saying it sounds like the latter

NHS is in a lot of schools, and many of these schools have different policies to get in - mine, for example, invites the top 10% to apply and they then have to complete a tiresome app - about 1/2 of these people are accepted afterward. In some schools though, the policies are a 'lax, and anyone (within reason) can participate. In that sense, it’s hard for colleges to gauge exactly how ‘selective’ and prestigious your school’s NHS is.
And once you’re in it, what do you do? While in some schools NHS is really active, in others it doesn’t do anything. Essentially, I view it as a hyped, elitist charity - but it doesn’t HURT. I wouldn’t have it as my main EC though…
