Does not visiting a college considered a bad thing? Or okay?

Well, of course a month would be better, but a one- or two-day visit is better than none, and far more practical than a month.

exactly my point.

Wait, how do schools even know if you've visited their campus or not?

from what i've heard, they keep you in "a record" or "logsheet". Im pretty sure there's your phone number, name, and email at least

anyone correct me if im wrong

But what if you don't do a guided tour, and just wander around the campus on your own or something?

Also, it seems impractical to visit colleges before you've been accepted to them, so how can the colleges use whether you've visited or not as a factor in admission? What if you plan on visiting AFTER acceptance?

Because the whole point of visiting a college when a junior is to see where you'll find yourself the most comfortable, especially now with app costs reaching $100, thus it seems rather ridiculous to apply to a school you know you won't attend based on environment which is one of the purposes of visiting a college before you know if you're accepted or not.

True, but even a couple $100 application fees are still a lot cheaper than a big trip across the country :-/

Well, I think that trip is lot cheaper than a $40,000 tuition from a school you'll be transfering out of the year after. ;)

Yes, but I was questioning the point of visiting before you're even accepted.

You can always kindly ask for a guided tour, but better schedule it when admissions office has some time. Asking a GUIDED TOUR shows adcoms you are really interested on hearing facts about buildings, academics, and about the school in general. Just wandering around? OK, good for you.. you could be there walking around because you got some time to kill or maybe because you're interested.. but how is the adcom supposed to know? I think it's wise to actually schedule a tour.

Well, you don't ask for a tour just in hopes to get accepted. It MIGHT in some way help (not for top elites) since you are showing interest. Please don't just go if you wish to get admitted. That's just giving false impression. Plus, you would get bored..

Well, think about this made-up case.
Adcoms of college X is deciding whether they should accept you or some random guy called Walter. You guys have near-to-perfect status and have incredible essays, etc etc. But then, this person from the committee comes with a sheet, with a record that you have visited College X in Year X, along with a tour guided by admission officer John. They would accept you rather than Walter.

Of course you visit the college after acceptance. If you got accepted to several, i would first narrow the list, then visit the leftovers and come up with a final decision.

Visiting a school is not required, but it aids in making a decision of where you want to go. But be sure to be in contact with the school you want to go to, even if you do or don't visit.

Biff Loman.. the Death of a Salesman..

I'm glad someone knows :P

how's everything going with Happy? What about your relationships with your father Willy?

Lol.

visiting schools before applying also helps give the prospective student a better sense of what they are looking for (moreso freshman than transfer) - large vs. small, urban vs. suburban, religious vs. nonreligious, etc.
also being in the "collegiate atmosphere" helps stimulate students to continue to work hard senior year to try and get there and motivates to do apps

It's pretty hard to visit when my first choices are:
NYU, UChicago, UMich-Ann Arbor. They're all more than 3 hours by car to each other. So if I were to visit them, I'd have to fly to Chicago from SF, then fly to Ann Arbor from Chicago, then fly to NY from Ann Arbor. So.....I'm kinda stuck.

i'll prob visit UCLA. Less priority on USC.

what kind of freaking names are those : Biff, Happy.... and have you guys ever heard it on tape ... it's pretty funny( they're all doing this new england/new york/new jersey accent)

It's a good idea to visit, because it can cause you to change your mind about what you like and don't like.
