I took IB Chemistry my 11th grade year but due to terrible family complications it was the only class I failed. I have never gotten anything outside of an A to B+ in any other class and my GPA was barely affected and still highly competitive. I took the entire course, I just didn’t pass. In order to major in Aerospace Engineering, would I need to somehow make this up? I’m taking AP Physics this year. Could I possibly still gain entry through a highly scored SAT II Subject Chemistry test?
You need to contact their admissions office and ask.
“Students with an intended major within the College of Science or the College of Engineering must take a unit of Chemistry.”
2-3 hour tests are rarely a substitute for a requirement to take a full year class.
You’re taking a 2nd year of Physics rather than passing a single year of Chemistry? That may constrain your choices.
If you’re confident enough to take the Subject Test, then is there an online/cyber option you can add to your schedule?
The alternative is a note of explanation with your application and hope. I never like hope as a strategy.
Calling them would probably get a clearer answer and possible options than CC.
I agree with calling ND but my gut feeling is that for any engineering major, not passing HS chemistry is going to be a big red flag. Is there any way you can take chemistry again this year at school?
I just checked my transcript and I have half a credit of AP Chemistry I due to passing the first semester with an A. It’s just the second semester that was failed. Does this help?
If they say they require a year, and you only have a half year, then you don’t meet the requirement. Selective schools have any more qualified applicants than they can accept. You will be competing with people who have met the requirement. If I were you, I would try to find a way to retake chemistry this year.
The thing is, it only says they require a unit of Chemistry, not a year. I called in and they said it was fine. Online classes started today so I might just retake it anyway. Thank you everyone!
