any lnowledge?

No. They only give need based scholarships.

It's funny that I'm actually on here right when you posted. :)

That is strange, because I have heard few cases where the kids got Merit scholarships.

Yep. Northwestern doesn't "buy" students.

Honestly (and slightly unfortunately), I don't think it would really make sense for them to give merit scholarships because a student is basically smart by nature if he/she even gets accepted. It would be extremely difficult for them to say which smart student gets a merit scholarship and which smart student doesn't if every student there is already smart.

i agree, but "merit" also constitutes students who are gifted musically and athletically, which both are a little bit easier to judge than students who are academically talented. Also, simba, I heard recently that Northwestern is giving out merit scholarships to international students, but you might have to look into that, as I'm not so sure if it's true.

I'm pretty sure they do give out scholarships for athletics (kind of needed for being in the Big Ten). I've never heard anything about scholarships for musical merit though.

One of the good things about going to a school where there are kids attending from thoughout the area is that I can know what's going on at different schools besides just my own home school. One of my friends from another high school (one that I used to go to) in the area convienently told me that a girl at her school was being recruited by NU for field hockey (at least that's what she told me). From what I've heard, she's not really interested, but I know the main reason that my friend told me this was just to get on my nerves that NU was already interested in her while I have to work my butt off to even get their attention. Well, my friend's efforts worked, but I also know that's life and that NU kind of needs more athletes (no offense to anyone there). :)

I know an opera singer who got a scholarship.

NU does start giving a bit scholarship to internationals; it's not need-based in the sense that NU doesn't commit to meet 100% of the need for them. It's a way to lure more international applicants but I think I read that the amount is not gonna be anything substantial--every one of them still pays most, if not all, of the costs. Whatever the case, NU doesn't fund merit-based schlorship at the expense of need-based financial aid.

There's an article about merit scholarships at NU in the Daily Northwestern.

NU did award me a school-based national merit scholarship. I was a finalist, but didn't receive a national merit $2500 scholarship. Instead, I get $2000 a year from NU. I'm pretty sure not all schools give these.
