Does one bad class ruin your chances of getting into top schools?

In my geometry class this year I did not do so well. My teacher has a sick kid and was absent quite frequently. The school did not provide capable substitutes and we were expected to learn from videos she posted. This method of learning just did not work for me. She also graded lots of homework assignments for correctness not completion, so I couldn’t rely on that to bring up my grade. My final grade was a B-. Other than this I am a straight A student in mostly honors classes. I plan on applying to a lot of top schools. I also hope to be a science major, so schools will be looking at my math grades. Will this ruin my chances of getting into schools I hope to get into?

How would math homework be graded except for correctness?

are you a freshman? Many top schools don’t even look at 9th grade.

You might reconsider taking again in Summer - not for the top grade - but to ensure you don’t fall behind in math because if you struggle early, you’re going to continue to struggle.

I don’t know what a “top” school is - but there’s no college in the country off your radar because you got a B. I would focus on ensuring you understand math - and being a solid overall student and member of the community - and not worry about what college you may or may not get into.

Good luck.

  1. if your user name is your real name, change it!

  2. “ruin” is a big word. One B will not be the reason you don’t get into a highly selective school- but obviously it won’t help either. IF the class was so problematic that the highest grade in the class was a B, your GC should be willing to note that in their LoR. I suspect, however, that other students were able to manage an A, and this:

is problematic. If it means that you are used to your grades being pumped up by ticking the box, you are in for a jolt in college.

  1. if you have set your hopes and expectations on the famous names who reject 90-95% of their applicants you need to be thinking about what your “and” is: the students that I see getting into those schools have top stats- “and” something that sets them apart. Contrary to popular lore, it does not have to be a “national award” (those help b/c they are an easy way to recognize exceptional achievement), but it does have to be something.

First, change your screen name so it doesn’t identify you.

Secondly, No one grade does not ruin your chances for any school. Since you are in Geometry, I assume you are a Rising Junior? What classes are you taking next year? What are you looking to study in college? How did you do on the PSAT/SAT?

The ultimate goal is finding the “top” school that fits you, not the top school according to the thoughts of some magazine! That could be Harvard, or it could be your State U, or some school you’ve never even heard of. The one nice thing about this board is you’ll get lots of suggestions. Best of luck on your journey, and try not to worry too much about what school you’re going to go to.

No, I am a sophomore. Thank you so much : )

I hate to inform you and others reading this. A"B" is NOT a bad grade… It is what it is for many reasons. When starting your junior year maybe work with your teacher. Lots of people have problems with Geometry but do great with the math going forward… You DON’T need all As to go to a great college.

Most bay area high schools I’m familiar with only check for completion for hw, not just math, science as well. There are a number of reasons - one is that teachers don’t have time to check all hw submitted for correctness, second it gives the student flexibility in how much time to spend on hw without the stress. Another reason is that there are kids that don’t need the hw to understand the concept, so making them do it seems a little counterproductive. The OP is correct in that h/w or problem sets are there to give a slight boost in the grades, so the B- would probably have been a B.

As long as the overall school performance is doing good, that does not affect much since most of the time, the good classes will overpower it.
