Does one need straight A's for HYPSM?

I fear that this year I will ruin my perfect report card with a B+ in AP Calc BC. Yes, that's obviously NOT a bad thing, but the sad truth is that grades are what are considered the most by adcoms. They won't care that my teacher almost NEVER gives out A's..Regardless, I am pretty confident that I can get a 5 on the AP exam (everyone in the class did last year), and I have an 800 on the SAT Math and the Math Level 2 (prob 80 on Math PSAT). I plan on applying to HYSM...will this B affect my chances ? I mean, they can see from test scores that I'm obviously good at math, its just that I have this hard teacher. Should my GC mention it in her recommendation or something (that I took the class knowing that it was the hardest class offered at my school)?

I’m pretty sure you will be fine, ha. Are you only a junior, since you haven’t taken the PSAT yet? AP Calc BC as a junior… man, you’re lucky.

what makes you think you have A’s in other classes

Because I’m fairly confident, after a month of school, that I can pull off A’s in other classes. They are easier than my classes last year, in which I had all A’s.
And yeah, I’m a junior, which is why I’m kinda worried since junior year grades “matter the most.”

well what makes u think you are getting a B+ in Calc

Dont worry MegaVortext, he’s just being a ****.

Trust me, just taking AP Calc BC as a junior (and maybe having your counselor talk about it being the hardest class) will look fantastic (well, I say this as only a prospective applicant – so take it with a grain of salt, but I think that’s impressive), especially if you can maintain A’s in everything else. And, who knows, maybe you’ll pull off an A-!

As someone who knows at lest one underachiever each year at the
public HS I graduated from who got into HPS for the last three years
let me assure you one B+ == way perfect. These folks had multiple
Bs.

H especially does not really care if there is some other feature that is
appealing.

M is the same way too. So smile dude.

What about one C that I got in sophomore year in Calc BC (taken at college)? My professor was really way to strict…I was a mere 3 pts/700 from a B (!)

That’s the last math class I have taken btw, not a great note to end on, but unfortunately, I had no opportunity to take a higher level and I didn’t want to retake. Will this mess me up? Otherwise I have straight A’s

I gotcha. I really hope thats true…I mean I hear of kids with like 3.98 UWs getting rejected from these schools at my HS (at the same time, some 3.8~ish kids get accepted…). My ECs and test scores will be superb..I just dont want this little grade to ruin my entire application, because its not something I can help.

Not necessarily, depends on what else you have. For example, if you were an athlete, you might not need all A’s.

^ at hikids… does an athlete have to be superb though? what if i was a nerd who cant seem to succeed in athletics no matter how hard i tried?

Short answer: no.

Question for you: where can you see that HYPMS accepts non-athletes with only As?

Another question for you: what does HYPMS mean by “holistic” admissions?

Harvard explicitly says it does NOT have a minimum G.P.A. requirement. Of course you should challenge yourself by taking the courses that make sense for your goals and doing well in them, but don’t worry so much about one or two grades here or there.
