Does onlne activity cause deterioration in grammar skills?

Whenever I'm online, I don't punctuate correctly with commas and semicolons. I read posts without commas and it gets ingrained in my head as the correct way to say something. -.-;

I think my grammar gets worse every time I come online and don't study grammar that week.

It's also kind of ironic that on a forum for overachievers sum pe0ple ta1k li3k dis. I don't understand why people talk like that- It takes longer to type that out than it would to type it out normally.

No, that’s more due to you not checking your grammar. Being online doesn’t attribute to that. It’s just as if you were writing an essay. If you were to check over your spelling and grammar usage, it would sound more preferable. However, when most people are online, they know that they aren’t going to be graded for their comments, so they tend to ignore checking their work. If one checks their work and puts thought into their posts, then one could acquire better grammar skills through practice.

^
I see. That’s what I thought at first, too. I kind of developed a fear that reading grammatically incorrect posts would make me dumber over time. Lol.

No, it won’t have an affect on you in that regard:)

Just check over your grammar and posts and you will be fine.

In some probably entirely uncorrelated observation, before I was addicted to CC, I consistently scored an 8 on my SAT essay. But October, at the epitome of my obsession, I pulled off a 12. If anything, I’d say it did the exact opposite. ;)

well the first time i took the sat in jun. I got a 680 on writing, it went to a 770 in november, and I was online A LOT during the summer.

Oh, WOW. I spelled “online” wrong in the title…

I text with perfect grammar and spelling, except for capitalization. I usually type my posts and messages with proper grammar/spelling as well. When I do chat though, the grammar tends to go down the drain.

I text with “perfect” (my own version of perfect) grammar and spelling, including capitalization. The same goes for my posts and even IM… except that on chat, everything gets broken into lines instead of sentences (so there’s a complete sentence, it’s just broken up - I’m a slow typer). My grammar is far from perfect. It comes from never having taken grammar in school and from living in a small town. But, I do pretty well for myself. I wish other people at least made the effort. And knew some pretty basic stuff like the difference between “your” and “you’re” (typos excused).

NO WAI!

Omg ,let ,me, capitalize, noob ? CC, Ignore, this, if you ,see ; Lol.

my iphone makes me type words correct. well i would have anyway though.

I tend to use correct grammar in my posts and text messages (not IMs though, can’t be bothered). So I don’t think it really affects me.

The only time I don’t use correct grammar is when I’m texting a long message and I can’t fit it all within my 150 character limit without abbreviating and such.

I can understand using text talk on text messages and IMs, but it really gets on my nerves in the forums and in emails. I mean, come on! There’s no excuse!

Personally, I think being an internet junkie has improved my grammar, mostly because I’m an English-major-to-be and seeing such mutilation of the English language p—es me off, so I make sure not to do it myself. =)

Not for me at least.

It’s funny; I’m literally the only person I know who types with proper grammar. The kids who make higher grades than me have terrible e-grammar.
