Does overnighting schol app really work?

My son is out of town for two weeks. When he gets back, on a Sat., a schol. app is due the following Tuesday at an out of state school. If we overnight it on Monday am will it really get there in time to beat the deadline of Tuesday? Which company is best to go with for overnighting? The school lists a real address to send it to, not an email address.

I’ve never had a problem with FedEx.

Just check and make sure it’s not a college in a rural area with 2-day delivery. No on-line app? If you run into trouble call admissions, too.

Just do everything you can to get it in the right size envelope, ready to go, even before he gets back. Many fed ex locations have sat hours. Go in and talk to them if you can before he gets home. Most schools will go by the postmark date. We had to do lots of this with my Childs apps. If your local post office is open on sat…, talk to them as well and explain. They have rush delivery options too.

Fedex next business day (morning delivery, if available in the college’s location) is the way to go. I wouldn’t trust the post office. They sometimes have issues. Fedex has never failed me. Make sure you know the fedex drop-off location you plan to use and its last pick-up time.

We live overseas, I would often call someone at the office to see if I could fax or email the application to them directly. I use FedEx and UPS often for work, and never had any problem. When they say deadline is Tue, do they mean actually receiving it or post marked?

We had a problem with FedEx , sending an app overseas, but the receiving college said not to worry. FedEx is usually fine.

Double check whether the requirement is “postmarked by” as opposed to “in our office by”.

Thanks everyone. He gets back too late Saturday to do anything then. He’s going to have to work on it Sunday and take it to FedEx first thing Monday morning. The school info. says due by, not postmarked by. The school is not in a big city, but it’s not what I’d call rural.

We could fax it - do you think it would matter in terms of which candidates get the scholarship?

kbiresearch is right - you should head over to the FedEx or UPS office and pick up the envelope and have the address label all ready to go. A kid on his way to school will not have the time or patience to deal with their confusing address form.

OP, please check TODAY to make sure overnight is available. Ds’s college isn’t exactly rural either – 45 minutes outside a major metro area – but it’s far enough that it does not get overnight service via USPS. I found this out by accident and, thankfully, didn’t really need overnight. It might be different with FedEx, but do check to make sure overnight even is an option for you.

I ran into this issue last summer trying to FedEx something to my daughter at camp also about 45 minutes from a major city. We paid for overnight, but it took more than 48 hours to be delivered. When I complained, they refunded the FedEx fee, but they said I should have been warned that it might take that long. I was amazed, since I wasn’t warned at all and the fee wasn’t any cheaper.
Is there any way he can complete the application from his current location and FedEx it in the next few days?
