For the Freshman Essay 2, there are three options; the 217-page essay, first experience, and risk for righteousness.
Does Penn prefer 217-page essay over other two?
I wrote both 217 and first experience, and I think the latter represents me better, but I came up with an idea that Penn might prefer the former over the latter.
So does Penn really prefer 217 or am I an idiot to think so?

I thought so, too...but I think each of the three options has its own functionality - the 217 one tells them how out of the box you are, the first experience tells them how well you learn from events and use experience to develop yourself, and the last one tells them about your ability to resolve a problem and attack it, keeping in mind the risk/ethics involved, etc.

I really don't think they prefer one over the other, or they wouldn't ask you to choose anyway. And, besides, you can still come up with really whacky stuff for the non-217 essays...even the Why penn essay...

Of course not. One question may lend itself to a more revealing or more personal statement over another, but in the end it's the essay that matters, not the prompt.

If they preferred one, they would not include the others as options.

colleges want to see more of who you really are besides stats. if you think the first experience represents you better, then go for it! i don't think there would be any preference.
