Does Penn State require you to take foreign language courses?

I am currently a psychology major at a community college and am graduating with my associates in December. I plan to transfer to Penn State Abington. I have applied to several other schools but Penn State is by far the closest and cheapest option. I am currently taking Spanish 101 at my community college and hate it so much that I am debating withdrawing from the course. When I looked up the psychology major on Penn State’s website, the sample curriculum showed three semesters of foreign language. I do not know if this is a requirement or just recommended. If I would have to take two more foreign languages after transferring to Penn State, it may be a deal breaker. I do not care to learn another language and it would add to my workload, stress levels and hurt my GPA along with my chances of getting into grad school.

Call and ask to talk to someone at PSU Abington? But I believe it is a requirement.

Can’t get anyone on the phone :frowning:

According to here: http://bulletins.psu.edu/undergrad/campuses/details/1 (click on BA degree requirements on the right)

PSU requires 4 semesters (12 credits) of one foreign language. You’ll have to ask whether you need to complete this before transferring or not, but it is a requirement for the degree.

I don’t think a major in psychology at Penn State requires a foreign language. Check out this link .http://psych.la.psu.edu/graduate/current-students/course-requirements It will tell you the requirements. My son is a business major and it is mandatory for business students at PSU but not all majors require it. I would check with your advisor is you have one just to be sure.

^that’s for the Master’s.
Psychology requires at least 12 credits (you can take up to 6 more as part of your gen eds on top of the 12). Each class is worth 4 credits at the basic level, and upper intermediate classes are worth 3.
Almost all majors require reaching the 12th credit level. You waive the requirement if you took AP and have a sufficiently high score. Having a 3 waives the basic requirement, having a 5 covers 18 credits, ie., foreign language + all 6 required Humanities gen ed credits. You can either take 3 more credits in foreign language and are done with humanities plus cut down on social science/art requirements, with only 1 art and 2 social sciences on top of it to complete this gen ed block, or take a mix from 4 courses in Arts and Social science.
One way to fulfill the requirement is to participate in Penn State’s Summer Intensive Program a University Park. They have several languages to choose from. You must do that full time because it’s SUPER intense, but you cover the 12 credits in 10 weeks. If you do that over the summer, you’re done with the requirement.

HOWEVER another option is the Psychology BS. It means fewer foreign language courses (if you completed Foreign Language level 3 in HS you’re good) BUT you will have to take more math, biology and/or CS classes.

Thanks for clearing that up @MYOS1634. Sorry for the misinformation. I’m always amazed at how you know so much.

It’s no problem. Thanks for the compliment. Sometimes being a nerd has its uses.
BTW congratulations to your son on making it into Smeal. It’s become super selective!
