I registered for Chin 031, and my question is, does the course teach traditional or simplified Chinese characters? I previewed some of the required books for this course and they contained traditional characters. I really hope I learn simplified Chinese in this class.

Course description:
031. Beginning Reading and Writing in Chinese I (for Fluent Speakers). (A) Wu. Prerequisite(s): Restricted to students who can speak Chinese but cannot read or write the language.

Students focus on reading and writing skills. The objective of the course is to lay a solid foundation in both Pinyin romanization and Chinese characters, learning to produce and recognize approximately 600-650 characters. The class provides preparation for Intermediate Modern Chinese.

You learn simplified by default, however the textbooks nicely put the simplified and traditional characters side by side, and in past experiences if you tell the laoshi you want to do traditional, they will accept your quizzes, papers, etc in traditional.

You learn both traditional and simplified in 031 and 032. However, you are only tested on whether or not you recognize the traditional characters (you normally just get a list of traditional characters on tests and then have to write their corresponding simplified versions) and not so much on writing them.

I had that class with Wu. You learn traditional in the first semester while you’re still writing characters by hand. But in the second semester when it moves on to a lot of typed written assignments she switches over to simplified.
