I'm new to CC so feel free to advise, gently correct, or refer me to other threads that may cover this (I searched but didn't find what I was looking for).

My D is a hs junior and Pomona is her top choice. She has not yet taken the SAT or ACT but she has taken the PLAN and the PSAT. She scored significantly better on the PLAN with a projected cumulative score of 29-33. We're considering not having her take the SAT and just focus on 'studying' for the ACT but I wondered if anyone has any insight as to whether Pomona College gives any more weight or preference to those who take and score well on the SAT? I know that more students who take the SAT are admitted but I attribute that mainly to the SAT being the more traditional choice.

I believe Pomona's policy is to weigh them evenly but I just wonder if there's a general school of thought on this as to whether or not you find this to be true. Another reason she's considering not taking the actual SAT is because Pomona requires that all test scores be sent (unless we read that wrong) so taking it when she doesn't think she'll do well could work to her disadvantage.

I see no reason not to believe them when they say they will accept either test. My D took both once and sent both. Her ACT was slightly better than her SAT, but if she does not get in I don’t think that will be one of the reasons.

It does say on the common ap supplement to certify that all ACT and/or SAT test scores have been submitted.

My S only took ACT and he was admitted ED 1 last December for the class of 2017. We were in the same situation as you are - he did better on the PLAN than on the PSAT. He felt he wanted to focus his time on preparing for the ACT, so that is what he did. He took a lot of timed practice tests and said that helped him a lot.

As mamabear1234 says and PomKid95 confirms, when they say that they will consider both, Pomona admissions mean it. Both tests provide them the kind of information they want to know. Clearly each test has differences that play to different strengths. My S also took both, and according to his guidance counselor, the scores were essentially the same. The one thing to remember is that Pomona is a bit unusual as they require information for each and every SAT and ACT test taken. So if it is your ds first choice, it is probably a good idea to be pretty strategic about which tests she takes.
