I've heard about people getting their chances ruined because they put some stupid, regrettable stuff on their Facebooks or MySpaces. There were also people who were "caught" on Twitter.

So that leads to my next question...has there been anyone on this forum whose posts have been read by an admissions official? I'm pretty sure this site is well known amongst college counselors.

Although I have not heard of anyone getting “caught” on CC…i agree with you on the fact that CollegeConfidential is a well known site for college admission directors and other guidance couselors. I will say that people should be careful WHENEVER and WHEREEVER they post things up on. Hope I was a help in some way

You’d be surprised at the number of people who would put on the internet “HELLO, MY NAME IS , FROM , AND HERE IS A PICTURE OF ME NAKED AT A HEROIN PARTY.” If you just said a few rude things on an internet forum once, nobody will care.

Admissions officers do peruse these forums, usually for questions pertaining to their respective institutions. ^Ditto amarkov, it’s pretty insane.

If you get rejected because of Myspace or Facebook, you’re a moron. Plain and simple. Not only are social networking sites useless entities, they have the potential to ruin your admission chances?! Just plain stupid. As far as college confidential, unless you apply to college with your username, I doubt they know it’s you on these boards.

Oh please, enough with the paranoia. I have friends on Facebook that have numerous photos of themselves taking hits from a bong and holding Solo cups and they all seem fine attending Ivy League institutions and other top universities. Unless you really do something to screw up, you’ll be fine. And on CC, there’s pretty much no way for you to really screw up.

But it does decrease your chances in the sense that you could be spending your CC time doing something to enhance your college application. Heh.

Uhh, I’m pretty sure that Facebook profiles are automatically private, unless you SPECIFICALLY go into the settings and change it for the whole world to see. … Needless to say, don’t do that ^^
Anyways, I don’t think CC is a big deal because most of the stuff here is generally pretty … how do I put this, clean? It’s not like we regularly have posters that say “WHERE CAN I GET A DOSE OF CRACK IN ___ STATE”. So I really don’t think it matters.

Yep, 100% true. And if you have a webcam they can also take control of it to spy on you while you use your computer. Furthermore, once you submit the common app for a college, a keylogger for that college is installed on your computer so adcoms can make sure you don’t type anything suspicious or illegal.
