Does Princeton look at writing section of SAT?

Anyone know for sure?

Yup, they do.

btlesgirl are u sure?

becuz i remember when i went to a info session with princeton, harvard, and georgetown.

i think the georgetown rep said that they just scratch it out and dont look at it. Harvard said, "yes, we believe that an applicant's writing abilities are important...etc."

im not sure, but i thought i heard the princeton rep. say they didn't care about writing. hmm it might have been only last year..

anyone REALLY KNOW FOR SURE??

I believe that, though they probably did not look at Writing scores last year because it was the first year for the new SAT, they will look at them this year because they have some means of comparison (i.e. data from last year's applicants). So I guess, no, I don't really know for sure, but judging from what I do know from other schools, the answer is probably "yes." Also, if you choose to submit the ACT, Pton requires it with writing, so doesn't it make sense that they take the SAT writing section into account, too?

They count it fully as of this year.

lol i hope i dont sound like a broken record player.

but arbiter, are you absolutely certain? (like did you talk to an adcom rep. or read it in an official article?)

From the informational meeting after a tour this summer. I'm pretty sure its on their site under undergraduate admission-> testing, but its been a while so you should look it up if you want the online source verified. But yes, I would put money on it.

My College Counciler actually went around the US univerites (including Princeton, CMU, etc etc) and was told that it will be "glossed" over. HOWEVER it will be looked at critically if an applicant writes an UNBELIEVABLE essay... but has **** grades for english...

Princeton cannot claim they do not care about the WR because highschool kids will not give a f*** about it. Makes sense right?

I emailed the Pton Admission Office about this issue.

This is the response I got. It's a bit ambiguous, but I'd say the answer is: "Yes with reservations." (Writing doesn't count as much as Verbal+Math).

Since the wiriting portion of the SAT I is a relatively new segment, we will likely develop an impression of its predictive value over time. You should know, though, that we do not use any data--test results, grade averages, rank in class, etc.--in a formulaic way. We consider the whole picture presented by the many interconnected pieces of any given application to estimate a student's promise. The new segment of the SAT will probably be (like the current math and verbal segments) a helpful indicator, but not a decision determining factor unto itself.

hahaha what an ambiguous answer.

lol i know....theyre just stating what they have been pounding on their website..... anyways maybe that means they would not look at it as critically as how some of us(me especially) think they would....

thanks for all the replies guys!

Say, it's slightly off topic, but don't you think the new sat hurts math/science strong students. I mean, people who score high on CR will likely score high on writing too. It's unbalanced to have 2/3 of the test in english and 1/3 in math. What they SHOULD do is count math as most important, then CR, then writing.

lol not always true clen. i got extremely high scores on math and writing, and slightly lower on CR.

lol i winged it and got 790 on writing. dunno how, i just think grammar is common sense.

I agree with you about grammar being common sense. That's one of the reasons I'm the editor of my school newspaper. :D

lol this is my writing section strategy:

1)SAY each of the options in my head aloud and determine which one SOUNDS right.

2) Mark answer sheet accordingly.

I answered every single multiple choice writing question right, but they gave me a freaking 8 on the essay! So I got a 710. The weird thing is that I wrote a fine essay; everyone who has seen it has agreed. It's the weirdest thing ever...
I think it was a mistake to add the writing section!:-p

wat????

i dont think that works out. If you get every MC question right and an 8 on ESSAY, I think your score is 770-780.<-----this is wat my friend got.

i got every MC right and a 10 on the ESSAY, and got a 790.

That's interesting, Ernie, since I wrote the biggest load of crap and I got an 11 on the essay! I honestly think they score in reverse: the better you think your essay is, the worse of a score you get, and vice versa. Oh, and for the record, I got every MC right and an 11 on the essay and got a 800, so you don't have to have a perfect score on the essay to get an 800.

I am gettin my SAT scores this thursday.... really wanna see how i did.... random information...i kno
