Does Psychology/Sociology count as a core class?

At my high school at Nevada, the four areas for core curriculum are Math, Physical Science, Social Science and English/Language Arts. I know that World History, US History and US Government fall under social science but does Psychology or Sociology count as well? (I'm taking it as an elective). I'm mostly looking at Cali school, both UC and CSU, Thanks!

They are both social sciences and will fulfill the “G” requirement of the A-G. This means the grades will count in your UC/CSU GPA.

REALLY? WOW. I thought only my history and government classes will count! Thanks!

Anyone want to back or refute this?

Refute, tbh… homeschooler so I’m trying to follow the standard scheme of accreditation and it seems like most high schools count psych as an elective… soc is up in the air. Both can go either way really, but it seems like psych is usually elective

(can’t edit on phone)

If UC does accept them though it really doesn’t matter what the overall standard is though

I’m going off the Assist site which is for CA high schools to look up what the UC counts from their high school. I doubt Nevada has a comparable site for the UC/CSU system but from what I’ve seen, Psych and Sociology fulfill the “G” requirement. “G” classes are academic electives and those two classes are “elective social studies” classes. They don’t fulfill the “A” history requirement but they would both be included in your A-G UC gpa and certainly look nice on top of the regular high school history requirements. Talk to your counselor but I don’t see why intro courses in those subjects would count from a CA high school and not a Nevada one.

Hmm… I see… Thanks Turtletime! By graduation, I would have taken four years of English, three years of Social Science, Five years of Math and four years of Science PLUS two years of marketing, two years of graphic design and two years of psychology/sociology. It all depends on what admissions thinks but I really think I’ve met AND EXCEEDED the minimum. It would be great if psychology and sociology counted as a core class/social science though since it can highly beef up a GPA that doesn’t look at electives.

Well, this is just info for UC/CSU schools. Don’t base all colleges on them. I wouldn’t stress about them not being counted as “A” classes because you have enough (and many CA high schools don’t even offer more than 3 years of “A” qualifying history/social studies.) Plus, those courses will be included in your GPA.

CA private schools don’t have the same approach. They will generally look at everything and so wouldn’t necessarily see them as only electives as opposed to core. The A-G thing is really a public CA thing.

I’m only looking at CSU or UC when it comes to Cali, so Public all the way! So if they count psychology and sociology for my GPA, would my marketing, hospitality and graphic design classes fall under that too? All three of those are program/major classes at my high school so they are like required electives… Sometimes I just wonder if they’ll look at the four core and language and stop there when it comes to calculating GPA…

Some things to keep in mind. The UC/CSU only calculate 10th and 11th year grades. Only A-G classes are calculated and only 8 semesters of honors credited. There is a calculator on their website which you’ll need to use before applying. You’ll have to talk to your counselor about those other classes. It gets a little tricky when you bring in less typical subjects like hospitality. I’m not sure anyone here could give you that specific of info. The CSU schools are all about stats but the UC is a holistic process. They’ll look at the classes you took, your scores and your essays.

You are going to do just fine. If you meet the recommendations and did will, you should have a good shot. Hope you get in where you want!

Thanks Turtletime! From what our college center counselor said at my school, just leave it all up to them haha

Colleges that have a “social science” requirement or recommendation (almost all) accept history, government, economics, psychology, sociology, and anthropology as qualifying courses; it is not just a UC or CSU thing.

Hospitality and marketing are not likely to qualify as core a-g courses for the UCs or CSUs; graphic design might as a g course (art/music), but for any of those you should not assume they do unless the UCs/CSUs confirm.

You should also note that the requirements for courses and GPAs you will see on the CSU and UC site to qualify for admission are the minimums needed to qualify. Those minimums will determine for a California resident only that the resident will be admitted to “a” UC or CSU, not necessarily one of his choice. For non-residents, those minimums simply determine that you can be considered at all for admission, not whether you will actually be admitted to any UC or CSU.

Thanks Drusba! So you back up that my psychology and sociology courses will count as a social science almost anywhere? I was hoping my marketing and hospitality classes would fit into academic electives but again, since I’m from out of state, it’s all up in the air. I called three CSU’s and three UC’s about my graphic design class and all UC’s said it doesn’t count as art and all three CSU’s said they DO count as an art. Then my graphic design teacher popped the news that starting this year, graphic design courses will count as an art in California which assured me quite a lot but still leaves me a tad confused…

Bump!!!

One last bump! Anything anyone?
