How does recruiting work for Penn? I’m sure it helps but how much? Specifically sprint football? Anyone know how much weight it has? Do coaches have a lot of weight in the decision?
Though I couldn’t answer specifically for Sprint Football, in general, recruiting works similarly to other D1 athletics, without the possibility of athletic scholarship help. Coaches generally have a limited number of “slots”, depending on the sport, which can make a huge difference for an applicant. Ultimately, all admissions decisions are ultimately made by the admissions staff. What year in HS are you?
Recruiting helps alot. Each sport has a number of slots at different academic levels (bands). The ivys use a formula called an academic index to compute what band you fall into. Each sport has a different bands levels and # of spots. The idea is that overall athletic teams reflect the general population within a standard deviation. That means if a team recruits a lower band they need to offset that with an athlete in a higher band. That being said your best chances are in sports with larger team because the they have more flexibiliy in balancing bands. In sports with smaller teams where their are only 3-4 spots a year most those recruits would need to meet the normal addmissions criteria.
All that being said your sport will only be a benefit if you establish a relationship with a coach that will “sponsor” you though the admission process. If you meet the band criteria your coach wants and he has a spot, and he wants you on the team they will go to admissions to get a pre-read and indication of you getting in with their support. If addmissions gives a good indication the coach will tell you. This is a very good indication you will be admitted HOWEVER this is not a guarantee until you apply and get a likely letter.
Finally my experience has been with regular football and a few other sports like soccer. I am not sure if sprint football has the same level of suppport. I heard that princeton did not offer recruiting support for sprint football before they closed the program
Best thing to do is call the coach or send an email and he will gladly give you the low down.
Did you look on the Penn sprint football website? There is a form to fill out for potential recruits and the coach’s contact information is listed. That would be the best place to get information.
Sprint football helps. Not as much as ‘regular’ football, but it does carry weight. It’s impossible to say how much, though. You do need to be a strong academic candidate as well. You’d start by contacting the sprint football coach, filling out their form, and then taking it from there. I’d suggest doing Penn’s terrific summer football camp, as well.
@nhparent9, Ivies don’t give athletic scholarships.
@connections I think @nhparent9 was clear that Ivy schools don’t give athletic scholarships:
“recruiting works similarly to other D1 athletics, without the possibility of athletic scholarship help”
^^Sorry, read it too quickly. Thanks for the clarification.
