does Rice have international prestige?

I no that schools like harvard, stanford, yale, etc have a lot of international prestige, in that they are not known only in the US by also in other countries, schools like Brown and UPenn probably dont have a lot of international prestige though, do u no if rice has international prestige?

it depends on who you ask...a random person...NO...an educated person that is well informed in their field..I would say yes...i had heard of Rice in south america.

i dont think so....everytime my mom describes rice to relatives in china, europe, and australia, she hads to add on "it's the harvard of the south" after telling them i got into rice....and my relatives are pretty educated; theyre doctors and lawyers and whatevers...lol.

but i've often heard that undergrad is no where as important as grad.

I wouldn't think so. Rice isn't even that well known in parts of the U.S. I mean here in AK virtually no one has heard of Rice. When I mention that I got into Rice I have to explain that it is "the Harvard of the South".

well...like i said...it is definitly not like harvard..but my family knew about rice and they live in south america and some people know about it. but yea it doenst have an international prestige...but why does internationally matter that much...graduate school matters alot more like he said.

That presupposes that the poster intends to go to graduate or professional school; when it comes to job-searching just after graduating, prestige could be taken into account.

well, who cares what the public think? If im not mistaken, the guys in grad school adcoms, interviews and all will know Rice and its excellent rank of 17 in the usnEWS...

yes and even if the people dont go to graduate school...Rice is known more i would say because of its success in baseball...you your employ cant know what rice is although idk if he will know it for the academics. but i would say that it needs some more prestige and thats what lebron is supposedly workign on.

thats good... main thing is, the people who matter will know. Rice is a much higher profile college than many others still u know... those people do fine in life

yes thats what im saying..it doesnt matter if the average joe knows what rice is...the people in ur field WILL know and thats all that matters.

I disagree with you guys. I absolutely think Rice has prestiege, probably even internationally. It's very well-known everywhere, and even a moderately-educated person will usually have heard of it.

Haha. This is the only reason I even heard of Rice. I am a Mets fan, and when they drafted Phil Humber out of Rice in the 1st round, I looked up his profile and was surprised to read that he had a high GPA. I thought "smart guy, why would he go to Rice." But when I saw where Rice was ranked in US News and did some research, Rice really is a great school. To bad I found that out after the application deadline...

From reading posts on this board, it does seem like Rice is presitgious in the South, especially Texas. But where I live in NY, not too many people are aware of how good a school it is. The only type of prestige that matters is the one held in the minds of Grad Schools and employers.

"smart guy, why would he go to Rice."

hahahahahaha. How mean ;)

ya if you are looking to ride the wave of prestige with nothing to show for it, youre just being a tool. thats not the point of going to college, getting an education, or any minimally idealistic virtue. personally i would much rather have someone say, "man that guy is pretty sharp," without knowing where i went to school. it comes down the product of education is you, not your degree. your degree is a receipt. nothing more.
