I'm doing a research, and would need to use a university library. Does Rice let high school students do that over the break?

Amazing what you can find out in 10 seconds on Google: [Hours — Fondren Library - Rice University - Houston, Texas](http://library.rice.edu/about/hours/index)

^^What’s with the negative attitude? He/SHE was only asking a question. It would have been helpful if you actually provided him/her with an answer to “Does Rice libraries let high school students in?” All you told him/her was when the Library was open, you didn’t answer whether he/she was allowed as a high schooler. So next time you want to criticize somebody for not trying hard enough, make sure you have the answer.

And usually, they will allow you to use their books in the library. HOWEVER, you can’t check them out or use the computer since you don’t have a student ID. Just tell security/the front desk clerk what you want to do and show them your high school ID.

The link also says that visitors are allowed by showing ID. I didn’t mean to be negative, I just find it amazing that some people go about things in a way that makes things harder than they need to be.

lhd555 - blackeyedsusan has been a very helpful member of this forum. Sadly, when people post questions that they could have found out, it is slightly insulting. We spend our time here trying to help people. If you ask questions without doing any work, this is like saying that their time is more valuable than ours. The same is true at Rice. If you show up to a professor and ask them questions when it is apparent you have made no effort and haven’t been to class/read the books they will be far less inclined to help you. They help those who help themselves a little.

For this reason, questions about Rice and being at Rice are appreciated, but simple questions like “Does Rice give financial aid to international students” are better answered by looking at the website.

considering that the link is related to hours, it’s kinda hard for the OP to find it. The OP would most likely be trying to find a link that is for “visitor information.” So I think the OP was not insulting anyone by asking that question. Not everyone tries to look for visitor information and who is allowed to visit under the hours of operation, just like how you wouldn’t look for what is allowed to bring into a museum under a link for the hours that the museum is opened.
Also, that instruction “All visitors need to show a current Photo Identification at the security desk to enter the building.” is very vague. From a view of a Rice student, obviously it would seem that it is referring to all visitors. However, to an outsider, they would assume it was for the people at Rice who have a ID card. It is also vague since it is filed under Hours. Again, not everyone would assume that the instructions were referred to the general public.
If you guys realized, by providing hours of operation website, the information was not complete. I hope the OP hasn’t tried visiting yet because. He is restricted due to his age. “There is no access for non-Rice students under the age of 18 without special permission or adult supervision.”
[Building Access for Visitors — Fondren Library - Rice University - Houston, Texas](http://library.rice.edu/services/using-library-space/building-access) <–this site is better.

I think looking for reasons to be insulted is a waste of ‘valuable time’.

OP - Use the library at Rice for your project. My daughter did for her NHD project many years ago. They are quite accustomed to handling local high school students.

It’s ironic that the OP wants to do research at the Rice library but would not take the initiative to Google “Rice library”, call the phone number listed, and address the question directly to a Rice librarian.

I don’t think my question would carry a great debate. I also don’t think Rice students would spend time arguing over trivial matters like this. Thanks for constructive comments that help me

belly - It’s more a CC thing than a Rice thing.

These CC people carry too much pride. I don’t understand how people would feel insulted over something very impersonal on the internet. There is no need to be haughty online, as no one knows, or care about who you are. Your username is just another username, which with a few exception like silverturtle, won’t likely to be remembered
@ This is not directed toward any particular one. It expresses only my exasperation

ldmom06 - I would beg to differ. Rice professors and students greatly appreciate effort towards a goal. The difference between giving a man a fish and teaching him how to fish. The latter shows effort and is a more sustainable form of existence.

Some people care who others are. I certainly want to know who will be attending Rice, I know the members who were at Rice with me and still are, and I know some of the parents who contribute here. This is not just a message board. We have pride because we are proud of our school - and we want the BEST possible people to choose to go here. Which is why we invest effort and time.

oh gosh…
You people need to chill out
please don’t post anymore in this thread. I don’t want to argue anymore over this trivial matter. Antarius, unless you’re a dean, I don’t think your caring whoever attends Rice will carry much weight. After all, that’s the admission officers’ job.

It is a vested interest in our alma mater. Not that I am sitting here evaluating people. If we serve no purpose here (no Deans here) then why do people spend time on this board?

As for arguing, you don’t have to. Someone took the trouble to give you an answer.

Owl2014 - Appreciate the fact that you posted my name here. As for it being a secret, a little time on google will reveal exactly who I am. Sadly, the pro KTRU folk have resorted to slander and name calling just because someone does not agree with them.

I guess the real question is this - does no one want me to post here? If so, I will desist. If people actually find my “nothing better to do” remotely useful, then I guess it is slightly more meaningful than you assert.

To quote a famous housewife from Beverly Hills…“Enough!!!”
