I (one of the few, it seems) listed all of the schools I was applying to on the common application supplement, and among them were schools like MIT and Princeton. Will this hurt my chances? A few schools I applied to are ranked below Rice, and most are a few places from Rice.

No, they just use that information to see who their competitors are. I listed everywhere I was applying (from Stanford to SUNY Stony Brook and about 6 places in between), and I was accepted. I think you should just be honest.

i don't think it matters...i applied to all the ivys..lol..stanford, duke, NWern, etc...if they want you, you'll get in! good luck! XD

Well, my teacher had a student who applied to Harvard, Yale, etc. and after visiting Rice, knew it was her first choice. But the teacher and she say that she was rejected from Rice because of the fact that Rice thought it wasn't her #1 and merely a backup for higher ranked schools. I don't know why theyre so sure thats the reason for her rejection tho. She was a strong applicant, I think went to WUSTL instead.

Well, perhaps Rice thought she was using them as a backup, but if you demonstrate interest enough, it shouldn't matter which other schools you list. Anyway, it's 100% possible she wouldn't have gotten in if she hadn't listed the others...
