I would think no, but I am trying to find a reference.
Thanks.
Check with your athletic department, but it shouldn’t unless you are in a headcount sport and have a full scholarship. Most ‘outside’ scholarships can be stacked with athletic aid. The biggest restriction is on institutional need based aid, so an ROTC scholarship should work.
However, how will you have time for both?
Wondering the same…ROTC is very time consuming…and so are sports at the scholarship level. Is,there really time to do both?
That was my first question upon seeing the post title, too!
VMI and The Citadel wouldn’t have sports teams if it wasn’t possible.
And athletics is required at the academies too, but there the coaches know what is required for the military commitment and they work together. I’m just saying my daughter would not have time to also do 10+ hours of ROTC, especially during her season.
Time for both is not really an issue. ROTC classes are during normal class times. Some weekend stuff, but as with other classes exemptions are made for athletes in season if they are on the road. Actually helps as ROTC classes pushes her beyond the required 12 credits to 14 credits. Two real classes, “freshman orientation” and ROTC.
PT (physical training), ROTC normally exempts the athlete in season (at least at this university). They are doing more than enough. She probably gets more “PT” during one soccer match than most ROTC cadets get during a week. Off season it helps them keep in shape for athletics.
They have to give up 30 days over two summers for additional training, but won’t have a big impact though she will miss some of summer league.
Frankly, I learned more about being an officer on the college sports field than I did in any ROTC class.
I was looking for something official from the NCAA. Google did not turn up anything. I did see something in the rules about how it does not count as a “job”.
Oh, and the question is if the ROTC scholarship counts against the program’s money.
That’s why you need to ask the athletic department because they know which scholarships you can accept. I believe you’ll be okay.
A ROTC scholarship should not count against the program’s money, just as a need based scholarship doesn’t count for the Ivies. It’s funded independently based on totally different criteria.
Head coach was actually not sure. She was going to check with compliance, but I thought I would look for the answer as well. I’m sure it is somewhere, Google did not turn it up.
@bobwallace is everyone at The Citadel and VMI on ROTC scholarships? I don’t think so. My nephew went to VMI and his parents were full pay.
It’s possible that the athletes at those schools are on athletic scholarships without any ROTC money.
They are all in ROTC. That does not mean they all get ROTC scholarships.
