Does SAT Writing Matter?

I took the Jan 2012 SAT for the first time and got a 2050 - M700, R560 and W790 (11essay). Of course, I'll give it again as I'm confident I can get much more in reading and math, but I was just wondering how much value my writing score has, given how most people say it's the least important (and often ignored) section of the SAT.

Do colleges (for any major) care much for the writing score? How does this writing score benefit me?

Thanks

They are starting to care more now. Look at what colleges you want to apply to.

Really? I’m looking at the top 5 UCs + some Ivies and am flexible between engineering and economics (taken both courses at length in school - AP Math/Phys/Chem & Econ/Stats)

UCs care about W–after all, it exists largely because the UC system pressured the College Board to create it. Ivies will generally give it far less weight than CR and M, though.
