I was looking at the Stern website and it says that it offers economics as a major...but the economics department is officially in the college of arts and sciences? How does this work? Does Stern work with CAS in giving this degree? Is the economics degree from stern the same one i would receive from Cas?

The undergrad econ. dept at NYU offers classes to both CAS and Stern students. Its one dept, same classes, same profs. In Stern, you'll do your additional business requirments, while in CAS you'll have additional liberal arts requirements. The degree you'll get from CAS will be a BA, while the Stern degree will be a BS (though I could be wrong on this point). From what I've seen, most Stern people major in econ in addition to majoring in finance,....I didn't know of anyone in Stern that majored solely in econ (though I'm sure its probably happened).

I was wondering about this too, b/c I'm really interested in economics, and I applied to CAS. Is it possible to transfer from CAS to Stern, I know I've heard it's pretty tough, but have people done it? Right now I'm thinking economics with a minor in international business, but if I get into CAS I'll probably do economics & international relations, which isn't too far off.....

I've met someone who transferred to Stern from CAS. I don't know if it's particularly easy or unbelievably hard; all I know is it's definitely possible.

I'm in Stern, and our introductory courses in Economics (Principles of Economics I & II) are both in the CAS department of economics (V31). I've never really known the difference between Econ in CAS compared to Econ in Stern, but I think jwblue is right in saying that most Stern students majored in Econ with something else. The explanation that a Stern Econ major's curriculum is supported by the Stern core and the CAS Econ major experiences more liberal arts courses seems pretty logical to me.

Difference between BA and BS? I wish I knew. I think I'm supposed to receive a Bachelor's of Arts and Sciences (BSA)...I guess I'll see in four years. Haha.
