Does "Subject to Dismissal" mean that you'll be kicked out after that quarter?

I'm a transfer student to UCLA, and I came in from community college with a 3.65 gpa. Since I've been here I'm been getting As and Bs, and doing pretty okay overall. However, this quarter I got extremely distracted. I had a lot of personal and family issues going on, I admittedly got lazy, and just burned out in general. I realize that almost all of these are my fault. In any case, I had four classes, and I'm dropping one this week (10th week, meaning I'll need to file a petition), and I'm at risk of failing 2 of the other ones. I'm really really striving to just get Cs in them, so that I'll just be on academic probation and not actually Subject to Dismissal. I'm freaking out because I'm a junior, but units-wise, even if I fail them, I have time to make them up by taking 2 summer school classes after I graduate (I already confirmed this). So my main fear is the GPA requirement. I looked it up, and if your GPA falls below a 1.5, you are Subject to Dismissal. I know this is probably a stupid question, but it was a little unclear to me. Does falling into this category mean that you will definitely be dismissed from UCLA once your grades are in? Or is it more of a severe wake up call where they give you a stringent set of guidelines that you must meet in the next quarter in order to remain at UCLA. Help, I'm freaking out!! Thank you!

No guarantees, but I think in most cases, if you meet with a counselor and stick to the plan/contract that you set up (and obviously bring up your grades next quarter), you should be okay.

TheHutt: No I already saw that, that’s how I found out about the whole “Subject to Dismissal” thing. But then I read in other places that some people actually are kicked out the quarter directly after, so I just want to be sure.

I’ve been Subject to Dismissal. From what I understand, you are NOT currently STD - you’re at risk to be STD after this spring quarter?

The difference between STD/Probation:
You will be placed on Academic Probation if your Quarter/Cumulative GPA drops to 1.5-2.0. You have slightly more leeway with probation.

However If your QUARTER GPA drops below 1.5, for just 1 Quarter, you are placed on STD for the next quarter and can be kicked out ASAP if you don’t improve the next quarter.

As long as your next quarters are above 2.0, you will be fine. If you’ve been getting A’s/B’s then your cumulative GPA should be well above 2.0 and shouldn’t affect you. However you CANNOT get below 2.0 for the next 3 quarters after your STD quarter or you’ll be kicked out.

If you really think you will fail all your classes, then I would suggest withdrawing for the entire quarter - it will kill your GPA, and you’ll have to retake ALL 3 classes to make it up and replace the grades. If they’re major reqs, it would be best to just withdraw rather than risk getting C or lower.

doesn’t the 1.5 thing apply to your total GPA? if you’ve been getting A’s and Bs, you shouldn’t get a 1.5, even if you get some Fs this quarter.

To make it more clear - If you do become STD:

-your status will depend on your fall 2011 GPA. Summer is not required but of course you can take summer classes to improve it ASAP. As long as your next quarters are above 2.0, you will be fine. If you’ve been getting A’s/B’s then your cumulative GPA should be well above 2.0 and shouldn’t be a problem.
-However you CANNOT get below 2.0 for the next 3 quarters after your STD quarter (fall 2011/winter 12/spring 12) or you’ll be kicked out. So even if you improve in fall & next winter, if you screw up next spring again you’ll be kicked out asap.

I just recently finished UCLA in winter 2011. I was placed on STD back in Spring June 2011. That was the same quarter that I was walking too. I passed Spring quarter with a 2.0 and was able to graduate. However, I had to extend my stay to Winter 2011. I took both sessions of summer school and also passed my classes. But for my Winter quarter I failed to meet the contract requirement of 2.0. Does that mean that I won’t get my degree after all? And also was Winter quarter my third quarter because I took both sessions of summer school?

ADD ON TO MY FIRST REPLY: The reason I had to extend my stay to Winter 2011 was because I still needed three more classes. Thus, reason for taking both sessions of summer school and winter quarter.

Let me correct myself again. I meant to say FALL 2011 instead of Winter 2011. I repeat FAll QUARTER 2011 NOT Winter quarter.

Go talk to a counselor.
