Does submitting near the deadline hurt your chances?

My apps are due Jan 15th and I will submit them tomorrow afternoon.

Will that hurt my chances?

That would be utterly ridiculous if it affected you application in any way.

Think about it:

You submit your app in October (assuming quality doesn't change)...it's one of the first apps that your adcom reads (his mind is fresh from summer) and he's in a good mood. f

If you submit your application on the deadline, your application will probably be one of the later/last ones your adcom reads and by then he won't be in as good of a mood as he was in October.

Also, if a lot of people from your school are applying a top school, after that university has accepted a handful from your school, it has less and less incentive to continue taking people from your school. Getting your app in early is always better.

thats not how it always works

Of course, it's also not going to immediately ruin your chances - if they didn't want to let people apply on Jan 15th, then they'd set the deadline even earlier. Don't stress out about it, there's nothing you can do at this point to change the date.

edit: double post!

they dont always read them in the order received. sometimes alphabetically, regionally...
