Hey all, I'm a rising senior that plans on applying to Syracuse University ( not sure yet whether it will be through early or regular decision yet). Anyway, I wanted to get a feel from some of the members on this forum regarding the financial package you all received. Is Syracuse a university that matches the indicated need that middle class families are looking for? Or is it a much difficult process?

My family has money saved, but obviously not enough for full tuition of the four years. Hoping to take out as small of a loan as possible.

I have seen it go either way with SU. Some posters say they got a fantastic FA package (need-based aid) and others say they did not & ended up else where. “Preferential Packaging”, it depends on how badly they want you to enroll, bascially. Apply for admission, apply for FA and see what happens!

Miselism - My daughter is lucky. She got a wonderful FA package. I am a fulltime working mother of 2, my daughter who is attending SU and my son, who is autistic and will be with me the rest of my life. She was accepted in our state university here in PR, but what she is planning for a career is not part of their curriculum. So, she is starting this fall, with God’s help and Syracuse’s generosity.

She applied regular decision. I still have a EFC of 2000, but hey, I will do what I can to help my daughter fufill her goals in life.

When I got my first package, it was crap. It didn’t even cover all of the tuition for the first year. But then SU picked me to do some financial aid process for College Board where I had to send in my mom’s most recent tax forms. About 5 days after I sent it in, my package was increased by almost $18,000 so I guess it depends like SLUMOM said on how bad they want you to go to SU, your grades, and SAT scores.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Do I have a better chance of getting a good financial package if I apply Early Decision because they know Syracuse is my top choice? Or not exactley the case?
