Well, it can speak to your inquisitive nature, which you could talk about in an essay. But in and of itself, no, I don’t think that taking a MOOC will advantage you in any way.

I don’t think it gives you an advantage in and of itself, but as someone who has taken them it has come up in a lot of my interviews, and I have gotten feedback from the admissions officers and alumni that I have interviewed with that it shows a desire to learn and go beyond the classroom- genuinely honing that type of quality could be seen as an advantage.
If you are interested in the material in a MOOC, take it- they’re fun, IMO.
