I chose not to take AP US History in the beginning of the year, but I’ve had regrets ever since If I take the test does it make up for not having the class?
I’m a student in Southern California and have taken 4 AP classes so far. My grades ranged from C+ to A+ if that helps.
If you take the test and get a four or five, you may place out of a class in college. I beleive some colleges will also give you credit, even if you didn’t take the class. Be aware that AP US is regarded as one of the hardest to self study for.
While it may help for actual college credit, I suspect it does little (even nothing perhaps) for your application. Colleges are always saying they want to see a rigorous course load, I’ve never heard anything like “we want to see how many AP tests you’ve taken”.
Claremont mom echoes what I have heard others say regarding this, but there are also people who say that taking an AP test for a subject you have real interest in can be a boost. My kid is probably going to study Psych in college. Our school doesn’t offer it. She self studied AP psych and got a 5. She was able to show in her application and essays that she has a genuine interest in psych. The issue you may have is that you had the opportunity to take APUSH in school and didn’t. Colleges will see that your school offered it and didn’t take it. To then take the test as a self study may raise eyebrows. I should have mentioned that in my previous post. If you are a junior, can you take it next year?
I’d assume OP took/is taking a non-AP version already.
Back to the original question, not taking a single AP class will not count against you. There is no expectation that you need to take every AP class that your school offers. As long as your 4 year schedule is rated as “most demanding,” the individual classes don’t much matter.
As far as taking the test, it may get you some college credit, but it won’t “make up” for the fact that you did not take the class.
My school would not let a senior take APUSH since we have to take a civics/econ or AP Civics. I chose to take AP Psych and Music Theory because that was what I enjoy and was recommended for my intended major. I just want to up my chances into getting into my dream school.
As to use of an AP test score if you failed to take the class, if it is high enough for any particular college, it can be used for credit once you are in college but might not be allowed to show completion of required courses for admission. However, both the UCs and the CSU’s allow you to count a 3 or better AP score in US History towards required a-g courses needed for admission, see http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/a-g-requirements/index.html.
