Does tech include honors points when calculating GPA?

I know they only take core classes and add 0.5 for every ap classes, but do they add bonus points when calculating your GPA? For example, I got an 85 in AP Bio, but on my transcript it shows up as an 92. Willl tech take off the 7 bonus points and then add the 0.5 for ap credit, and then recalculate my GPA, or add the 0.5 for the offical weighted grade and then calculate my GPA?

I think they will take off the 7 bonus points giving you a 3.5 instead of a 4.5 for that class.

nope, just asked them. They keep the bonus points on. This makes me so happy.

Well keep in mind that your GPA has to be a little bit higher than someone’s like mine for admission considering you get the +7 bump. It will even out somehow.

with the bump my GPA is a 4.06. I don’t know how they even it out. without it, it is like a 3.67. What was your GPA, btw, if you don’t mind telling?

My GT GPA was a 3.5 (15 classes; 7 A’s, 8 B’s), though that is with no boost added in by my school. I was told if you have more A’s than B’s in your core courses, you are a strong candidate for admission, GPA-wise.

School A bumps grades in a way that colleges cannot see. School B does not. Students are admitted from School A and School B. Students at School B have higher college GPAs and lower drop out rates than students with similar statistics from School A. The next round of admissions, it’s more difficult to get into that college from School A and easier to get in from School B.

How much more difficult will it be? In this round, it looked like almost everyone who applied got in. How do they compare the students, school A students compared to school A students, or student A students to student B students? I have a 4.06 Tech GPA and a 31 ACT, and pretty good extracurriculars (NHS, Student Council, founded two clubs), and a decent essay. How would I compare? I think for my school in regular decision, I will be in the top 90% of people who apply (because most who are at my level GPA and SAT/ACT wise already applied/made it or don’t want to apply to Tech) in this round. Am I already a lost cause because I didn’t apply early?

You know, a lot of people who POSTED got in, but that doesn’t mean that “almost everyone who applied got in”. CC has a limited audience. I imagine a lot of the denied/deferred people don’t want to post and I can understand that…people who got in want to flaunt that. The results are skewed. It looks like they looked at more that GPA and SAT’s. Something on certain applications went beyond that. They have a formula that works for them.

no, this was at my school, not here. About 45 people at my school got accepted and of that I know around 30 people’s scores, and unless they really lied about their SAT scores-give take 70 points- (which i doubt because they seemed pretty in line with their grades and such) and I know there Rank, i can make a pretty good guess about their CNA/GPA based on my own and a few friends. I’m basing it off that, I really haven’t followed the admissions here.
I would say around 80% of people who applied early at my school got in.

Oh, that makes sense. Ga Tech is self-selecting. Not every high school senior is up for the challenge, so they don’t apply. It’s a tough, but rewarding experience. The limited curriculum also limits applicants. Kids know if they can do it or not. Having that self-awareness, they usually don’t apply unless they’re qualified. That’s why I think the EA admissions may seem to admit more. Just speculation.

I’m really kicking myself now for not applying early (I thought that my SAT was too low), because at least from my school, people who I know have a lower GPA and lower SAT got in early. So now, my chances are somewhat lower and if Banjo’s advice is true my chances even more lower than what I had thought.

Banjo is wrong…every school sends a School Profile when a student applies. They know about stellastar23’s school’s skewed GPA system + AP bumps.

they don’t give a GPA, i calculated my own. 4.06 with the bump and 3.67 without. so exceptional 1 way, decent the other. I’m thinking about not adding the points to make it more fair, do you think that would be a good idea?

Not always. The school profiles often have less information than you’d expect.

Schools - especially private schools - have an incentive to pad GPAs to get students into better colleges. They won’t always flaunt the fact that they pad.
