Does Temple University have a good engineering program?

Im a senior in high school and want to major in biomedical engineering (temple calls it bioengineering) and was wondering if going to temple for my major would be smart. My other choices are Rutgers school of engineering (which is my reach school), Penn State, Drexel, and Upitt. The thing with drexel is that it costs way too much. Pittsburgh is a good school but its another reach school for me. that leaves penn state, for penn state I want to go to the main campus but I may have to start at a branch campus, and abington is the best one for my major. I dont like the idea of commuting my first 2 college years, I want to be able to experience the college social life. Also Penn State is known for its “party enviroment”, I dont really like to drink so I dont know if the campus would fit me. That leaves Temple, its very social, and a well known school in the area. Temple is also where a lot of people i know are going so ill be able to make friends really quick through connections. So Im just wondering if it would matter if my degree came from Temple instead of Penn State or the other colleges, will I still be able to get a job coming out of Temple? I just want your opinions on my thoughts above.

i don’t think it matters too much but this is a better question for an engineer to answer. i have heard temple tends to weed out the stem majors with tough intro science courses so be aware of that. that being said, if Pitt is a reach. then i think Temple would be better choice than pitt or psu. Psu has VERY tough enginnerring program and i think the same holds for Pitt. Temple’s program is also hard but it may not be as hard at pitt or psu, and Temple has good bioengineering dept plus you are near Temple’s hospital plus so many ohter philly hospitals for interneships. pitt would offer similar options for that.

Temple may be more of a party school than psu btw. my kid does not party at all(or so he tells me ;)) and that has not been a problem for him at Temple. but dont pick Temple over psu solely because psu is a party school.

Would you prefer a school in the city or the Pa mountains?

hey- did you see this comment on another thread? My oldest was a biomedical engineering major and had great opportunities afforded to her. She interviewed for several research positions as a freshman and was offered two! She has since changed majors but only because engineering was not for her. She still has many of her “engineering” friends and they are a great group of kids. She is not in the honors program and through three years, she loves her advisors and was very happy with every professor (except for one). Not a bad batting average. She is very happy at Temple and enjoys it very much. She lives off campus and takes advantage of the security features (escort system) and has never felt unsafe and, thankfully, never had an issue. February can be rough in terms of weather but should be a good test for you and your daughter.

I grew up around the area, so Im a city kid, and Penn state being a party school isnt the sole reason why i want to go there, i still may go there. Thanks for answering btw, i thought i was never going to get a reply, and thats interesting about the intro science thing at Temple. Im a B+/A student math and Science, should i be worried?

don;t know, are you in ap classes. and if you donlt mind me asking, are you from city school or one of the swank suburbs, i ask because if you are city kid and find classes hard, i think Temple may go out of its way if you ask to help you succeed. Temple has a good math resource center and def has options for kids to turn to if they find classes hard.

My guess is teh kids who party too much and don’t avail themselves of help if needed are the most likely to get weeded out, hope that helps.

Im actually out of state (for the past 4 years actually), but i grew up in PA, and am familiar with Temple, Drexel, and Upenn area because my parents worked there. The school i go to is very limited with AP, and we just got AP classes last year. I have taken Honors classes though and i dont find many of my classes hard, im lazy in most of them. I only pay attention in classes i find hard and like them because they dont bore me. I went to middle and elementary school in a private school in Bensalem. Its considered a public school but everything about it is like a private school. We were learning high school level history, english, spanish and math during our 7th and 8th grade. My 1st choice is Rutgers, but im kind of doubting whether i can get in, their engineering program is so competitive. I feel like Temple University is one of the colleges that ill get into without a doubt, so its my safety school.
