Lets say I wanted to apply to 12 colleges- do colleges see how many schools I applied to and does if affect my chances?

No. But you can only apply to 1 school Early Decision should you choose to do so.

What may have an effect on your acceptances is the effort you put into each individual application. 12 is a pretty high number, and its important you put a high level of effort into each application you send off.

What are the benefits of doing early decision? Will I be allowed to apply to other colleges, and what happens if I get rejected from the school?

Look up “Early Decision” heck there’s even a wikipedia page devoted to it

I thought that if you completed the financial aid portion thru the common app, schools had the ability to “see” where else you have submitted your financial info. The common app is a benefit for the student, but what do the colleges get out of it? Maybe I am just paranoid?

You’re just paranoid. I applied to 16 schools last fall. I don’t think it affected any of my decisions…it just affected how much cash was going out of my credit card cuz of how freaking expensive apps are haha

If any of the colleges uses “level of applicant’s interest”, it is at least theoretically possible that they may see a “shotgun” application approach as an indication that you are less likely to be interested in that particular college, particularly if your stats are much higher than those of typical frosh at that college.
