Hello there :)

My relative recently offered to loan me $27,000 for college, so I'm wondering if requesting financial aid worth of $42,000 or $15,000 makes any difference?

How do the admission work?
Does applying for financial aid automatically puts you into a more competitive pool and students from the pool will be selected irregardless to their amount of need?

Thank you for your enlightening replies!

Some schools are need blind, in which case the amount of need doesn’t matter.

Most schools are need aware, and the amount of need does matter.

At Need-aware institution, do the colleges separate the applicants to two pools, one with FA, one without FA?

I don’t think most schools are need-aware. State schools aren’t. Many privates aren’t, either.

Most schools just throw out an FA package and if it’s affordable then fine, if it’s not, then go elsewhere. Schools that don’t meet need aren’t usually need aware.

The need-aware schools (I think) try to meet need, so if they don’t have deep pockets like the ivies, they sometimes have to consider need during the admissions process.

As for what happens at need-aware schools in regards to “piles”… We don’t know how all of them handle applicants.

you don’t get to request a certain amount. You provide your financial info, and the colleges determine your need.
