Does the ANIMAL HOUSE image bother anyone else?

I'm just wondering if anyone else is worried by the ANIMAL HOUSE image that Dartmouth seems to have / be gaining. I'm not sure how I feel about it...

I have no problem with, obviously its not draging down the academic/social quality of the school, so why trip?

My interviewer told me that the movie really toned down the lewdness for ANIMAL HOUSE because if they didn't, it would have been even more offensive.

Animal House is Dartmouth's hook for me.

It bothers me.

Yeah, what's the concern? That movie was made 30 years ago! Is Dartmouth Animal House? Of course not. Is it a ton of fun while being a totally amazing academic school? Yup.

Hmmmm,

Am I worried about how livin’ the high-life affected dartmouth in1962 (43 years ago) and the way it was portrayed in the greatest college movie of all time?

.......................................................no.

I only hope that the class of '09 will be ready for the big screen and live on another 43 years in the annals of cinema.

On the other hand, it does bother me a little that at that same time women and most minorities were excluded from all the ivy league schools. But, heah, that was 43 years ago, I've gotten over it.

I’ve come to enjoy having fun!

Dartmouth has ALWAYS had "the animal house image". I fear it is LOSING it by admitting more geeks. I agree with Nobu. D has always been a haven of normalcy among top tier schools.

My interviewer was best friends with guy who actually created the movie, and one of the characaters was based off of him (I forget which, but it was a more minor character).

Like people have pointed out, Animal House was a movie made in 1978 about college life in the 60s. It's a LONG time ago. Yes there is still lots of booze and partying and all that and Alpha Delta (the frat that the Animal House frat was based on) is still a very ragey place, but keep in mind that no one is going to force you to do anything. There's a dry frat, frats and "societies" with mild or no pledge period, and there are also plenty of people that choose not to get involved in the frat scene at all and are fine. I for one spend a fair bit of my time at frats but I know people that don't like frats and/or heavy drinking and they are still very happy at Dartmouth and have found others who share their interests. I really think Dartmouth has something for everyone. The best way to calm your fears, though, is to visit.

and plus, there's a whole substance-free dorm. also, Animal House was set at a crappy school with the majority of the Deltas failing all their classes - PROBABLY not the case at Dartmouth.

My Dad went to Dartmoutn and was an athlete and in a frat (I don't know which one). He's says that it was exactly like Animal House : ) He graduated in the late 70s

nope I love the Animal House image

Toga Toga Toga!

Couldn't have said it better, theo. ;)

Doesn't bother me at all.

<<animal house="" is="" dartmouth's="" hook="" for="" me.="">></animal>

Its not an orgy, its a toga party!
