I am considering doing the "GRE Biology Subject test" in October, but the Grad schools Im applying to state that it is not a requirement.

My question is, would me doing the Test help my application even though the college doesnt need it??

Also, if I take in November instead of October, the results come out early December, If I sent my results then, would it be received with less impact?

Yes, any good school will have all their accepted students do well on it. It will not help you by not taking it when you are being compared to students who did take it and got an 80%+ on it. Think about how you will be viewed relative to students who did take it. It can only help them and hurt you.

Taking the test will help you if you do well.

It doesn't matter if you take the test in October or November, since the November test results will be released in time for review at schools with December due dates. Even those schools which have early December due dates tend not to begin reviewing applications until a week or two later, or perhaps not until after Christmas, in order to leave time for straggling application items to be received and filed.

What if you were taking the test in November since it was the only date offered in your country and a few deadlines would not be met by the date ETS intends to mail out the score reports? Does that go against you? I mean you cant really do anything about it if ETS gives you the November choice only!!

The November scores really will be released in time for December review -- they're usually available around December 10, and ETS sends them to schools electronically. Applications which aren't complete are often reviewed after Christmas, and there's no bias against applications reviewed later rather than earlier.

Thanks mollie!! I'd read on the ETS website that they mail out scores around 19th Dec. I didnt know they send them out electronically beforehand.. so I guess this means the Uni gets your scores before you find out how you fared on the test.. I dont know if thats a good thing. Guess I'll have to take that chance or I'll be really late

Another question- So you get to send scores to only 4 schools in the first instance. So when you have to send them out to the other, you can do that only after the scores are reported to you right? Wont that make it awfully late till the scores actually reach the schools?

If I recall correctly, you can order the scores to be sent to schools before you've seen your score. If that's not true, and please check the ETS website to be sure, I must have ordered the scores to be sent to my other schools after getting the scores over the phone, which is still early December. My subject test scores did make it to all of my schools on time.
