Does the major you choose affect your admission chances?

I’ve started applying for colleges and all is well until they ask what I want to major in.

I’ve always loved history for as long as I remember so it’s a given that I’d take as many history/social science classes I possibly could. So if I were to choose to apply as a nursing major, would colleges see my lack of classes that relate to nursing (I didn’t take anatomy, AP Bio, or AP Chem) as a red-flag?

Also, for one of my UC personal insight questions, I chose to write about my love for history. Would college admission officers wonder why I chose to major in nursing if I’m so interested in history?

There are only 2 UC’s that have a Nursing major: UCI and UCLA. If you are applying to these schools, they have a supplemental application where you will submit a personal essay/statement on why Nursing? They will also consider which science classes especially Chemistry and Biology that you have taken along with any hands-on practical experience by volunteering or shadowing in the Nursing field.

Having other interests beside Nursing is definitely fine, but with acceptance rates for these programs at around 3%, your application needs to be very competitive so yes a lack of some science classes and major related EC’s could impact your chances.
