For those of you awarded the medal; did you have an opportunity to apply to other schools and see what they offered you in the way of scholarships?

Or did you have to notify RPI early?

I just want my son (he's a junior, and it looks like he'll be offered the medal) to have a chance to think about other schools too.

Congrats on the possibility of being the medal winner. My D was the medal winner and while I don't know if she's been accepted, she's unsure if she wants to go to RPI. Being the medal winner certainly looks good on any college application. We've heard it's 3:1 male to female ratio. Anyone out there know anything about that. Thanks for any info.

Well, basically RPI is a tech school meaning that the guy to girl ration is extremely slanted. In terms of prestige, RPI is very well known in New England and is one of the top engineering school in the region (although it often gets overshadowed by MIT)

I remember from the tour one of its alums. invented the ferris wheel (lol)
But in terms of financial aid, RPI is very generous. I won my school's medal and was thrilled at the time, but then I discovered that over 3000 other kids received the exact same thing.

Only medal winners can apply early action, which is a plus (too bad I procrastinated past the deadline) The application fee is also waived for winners.

I visited the Campus and loved it despite the fact that Troy, NY is a "ghetto", but I'm used to it because I live right near Lynn, MA and its very much like it. The students were very friendly, but were honest in admitting that the social scene there was limited. Many of the guy students travel to close-by Albany or to Frat Parties with Vassar College. Speaking of Frats, the Greek Scene is fairly big and, like most tech schools, drinking is very popular.

In terms of technology, one word: amazing. All students have a state-of-the-art laptop and there is incredible wireless LAN coverage. The buildings seemed to provide a nice contrast between modern and old.
---All that being said, RPI is my third choice school between Dartmouth and Duke. I will probably end up going there because my Stats are a little too low for Duke, but we'll see. Good luck to your daughter

PS: RPI offers ED and Early Action. This means that the decision can be non-binding. Medal Winners can apply any way they want (Regular, early, ED) and will still receive the scholarship if accepted.
