Does the party scene distract from learning?

I'm considering going to IU because I'd be a kelley direct admit, yet the "party school" reputation is kind of steering me away from it. Is it really as bad as it seems? Does it distract from the academics or is it manageable? What dorms would you consider to be the quietest or more academic-oriented?

If you want academic oriented places, live on an academic floor, be a residence scholar, or live in wright. I would advise you to live in the Kelley Living Learning Center, but it’s in McNutt. McNutt has the reputation of being a party neighborhood, but that really depends on how you look at it. I lived in Foster last year (which is Northwest, the “party place”), and while it did live up to its party reputation on Th, Fri, and Sat, it was very quiet on weekdays and Sundays. Everyone at IU is paying for school, so they understand when it’s time to work. IU parties hard, but they work hard too. It’s only distracting if you distract yourself from work.

It’s only as distracting as you want it to be. You can avoid it pretty easily by living on an academic floor or learning community. Here’s a link to all of them with further info: [IU:RPS - Housing Guide](http://www.rps.indiana.edu/lclist.cfml)

Best dorms for non-party people would probably be Forest, Read, and potentially Wright/Eigenmann. It really depends on the people who live on your floor above all else though. Northwest is pretty much a nuthouse on the weekends no matter where you live but all the other dorms have a decent balance.
