i was wondering if there are any schools that have cut the number of students they normally admit and which ones they are. especially california public schools where there's been some major budget cuts..

Most universities that are hard-hit by the budget crunch are not cutting back on graduate admissions, they are cutting back on funding. California public universities will definitely be losing some funding lines at the graduate level. No question.

History department at my school didn’t get too many more applications, but they let in fewer people because of funding.

My program at UCSF (biomedical sciences) had a pretty standard incoming class of 30, this year it’s down to 20. However, the program guarantees tuition and fees covered, so that’s their way of cutting funding.

Most schools are making some kinds of cuts - a few smaller departments are rumored to have even shut down admissions for the year due to a lack of funding. Most are reducing the admissions, the funding, or both.

There are a lot more apps this year, as well, but the number of “high-quality” applicants is unchanged. The people who decided to apply due to the economy usually lack a strong application.
