It's a stupid question, but I've heard that many colleges tend to disregard the writing section. Or do they count the essay only?

Actually, I'm in a weird situation. I got a 690 on the writing section, far lower than my two other sections(800CR, 770 M). I got 62 on the multiple choice and 12 on the essay. Will they read my essay?

I'm kinda confused what the issue on the writing section is all about...

They all do, but some only consider math and reading.

It counts but less than your CR and M (which are really high, 1570) so it can't really hurt you much. If you were considering retake, I suggest not.

I'm in a very similar situation; I scored 800s on CR and M, but only a 710 on writing w/ an 11 essay and 67 MC score.

There was a list floating around with all the various college's respective attitudes to the writing section. Some of them disregarded it completely (Math and Science schools like MIT and the like), some of them weighed it equally (mostly liberal arts schools), and most of them gave it lesser weight than the other two and considered it slightly.

So it depends on your college of choice; If you fall into the middle category then you might want to retake it, if you lie in the ends then it doesn't matter very much.

Now, if anybody can find that list... :-)
